Does anyone know if there's a St Aidans Freshers Facebook page and if not, how we can get one set up?

No idea but I remember that back in the day I set up a Trevs one which ended up being fairly successful...I even vaguely organised a pre-Durham meetup which wasn't as successful as planned (6 people turned up including myself, an aidans person and 2 other trevelyanites who I'd already met ).

That suggests my previous post might be wrong, sorry - those options do seem to indicate that the programme is expected to take place at Queen's campus. I'm not quite sure why that should be the case since I would have expected Geography with foundation to be taught at Durham, along with a bunch of other foundation options which are definitely located in Durham. Call the foundation centre people for definitive advice - we're all just guessing here.

Got my letter - am in John Snow, at least for first year. Happy that i'm going to Durham uni. Thanks for all your help, anyway

hi all, I was just wondering, how lenient is durham in accepting you if you miss your exact offer? I do the IB and I'm assuming my offer is 37. The college is Univ.
Thanks

It completely depends if your course is full or not - college is irrelevant, if you miss your offer I think they can change your college and still let you in (same with insurance offers).

If there are 100 places for your course and on results day they have only 90 people who got the grades and are going to Durham, they can take the next 10 'near misses'. If they have 105 people who get the grades and are going to Durham, then there's no way they will allow any 'near misses' as they are already going to be fined for having 5 students too many.

Do you have any idea how they'd respond to missing one grade but doing better than asked in another e.g. getting A*AB when the offer is AAA?

Again, it's the same: if you miss your offer by 1 UMS but the course is full then you will not be getting in.

If there are spaces, they will rank 'near miss' candidates, and yes getting A*AB instead of AAB would probably put you higher up the list. If the A* was in the most relevant subject (eg in Chemistry for a Chemistry degree) that might push you even further up the list - they will devise ranking criteria if there are spaces.

But it's all hypothetical thinking, as it's completely dependent on (a) how many places are available and (b) how other candidates did.

You have no control on either of those things, all you can do is work as hard as possible to meet your offer because if you meet your offer then you definitely get to go!

I recently got accepted and have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer:

Can students just walk into any college or are they somehow restricted? I dont just mean student bars, but any other area (except of course inside student rooms) like libraries, common rooms etc..

Can students go and hang out at other college's premises? For example if i wanna take my books and laptop and study on this lawn: http://www.picturenation.co.uk/view/info/54055/university-durham-listed?page=2&catid=144

Will I be permitted even though I am not a member of this college? How common is it for students to sit on the lawns and study/hang out?
Yes, of course you can go into other colleges! You'll probably make friends at other colleges so you can go and see them. The libraries tend to be restricted (I know Trevs is anyway) as are the bedrooms (though obviously you can go and visit your friends' rooms) but pretty much everywhere else is open. However it may depend on the college...

You can go and hang out at other colleges, though if you're on your own at a college that isn't your own you may get some odd looks I guess. Given that's the castle I think it may be more restricted though, but if you show your campus card it'll be fine I guess? Other colleges are more open though.
You're not allowed to go on the lawn in front of the castle except on special days. :frown:

But they have other pretty areas around there too, and the library is pretty cool, with a cute spiral staircase.

I'm not sure why you'd want to sit on another college's lawn as most colleges seem to have their own. Also, this is England and Durham is in the north and not particularly warm for most of the year. You're unlikely to be there June-October when the weather is nicer. There are probably not that many days when you'd even want to.

no actually i would be there june-oct. since i would be doing a master's. If i study inside for hours i get a headache. It is common at my uni now that everyone is sitting on the lawn on campus and doing their work there. i would like to take a blanket and my laptop outside with me so i wondered whether this is possible.

well i havent seen all the colleges' lawns yet so i might prefer some over others for whatever reasons (more shade, less shade, less noisy etc...). I just simply wanna know if I would be allowed to sit on whichever lawn i want to or if there are restrictions. one person above mentioned, no one is even allowed to step on the lawn of the picture i posted unless it is a special day????

Can't speak for the other colleges, but at Mildert, nobody would even notice - there aren't any fences or anything. Then again, most of Mildert's lawns have been way too muddy to sit on for most of the year. Hopefully this will have massively improved by the end of the exams!

Go to one of the Hill colleges. They all have lots of grass that people sit on to work in the summer.

As far as I'm aware. I saw some people walking over it on the open day and stuff, but because it's in the Castle and it's open to the public and such I imagine they want to keep it looking pristine.
Hi can someone tell me the typical term dates and how long they last? Someone told me that they were only 8 weeks long?
Ok, term dates are always the same, first term's 10 weeks long the other terms are 9 weeks long. The provisional dates for the next few years are on the website and easy enough to find. First term starts on a Thursday but Freshers arrive the weekend before then. Final term's 9 weeks with 3 "revision" weeks, 3 "exam" weeks (you're unlucky if you have exams the whole time, if you're a scientist you'll probably finish sometime in the 2nd week of the 3) and then 3 weeks of fun stuff
Can I ask... do we get our maintenance grant and loan in one go or in segments and do we pay the accommodation costs in one go or is that split up as well?

The student finance stuff comes in 3 parts, one per term. You also get a bill for 1/3 of your accommodation + whatever else comes up (e.g. various stuff like gowns for freshers in some colleges) each term, so this should not be a problem.
