That doesn't really help. It gives prices for both 33 and 38 weeks and says not all options are available at all colleges. St Aidan's is still showing as 38 which seems to be a change on last year, which is what I thought the university had backed away from. Is it just out of date?

That's to cover the fact that some Colleges don't offer self catering, four don't offer catering and one doesn't offer undergraduate lets. I'm sure Aidan's will be offering 33 week lets and the website just hasn't been changed yet.

EVERY college has to let freshers have 33 week lets. Colleges are really bad at updating websites. But there are no compulsory 38 week lets this year, if your college tries to tell you you can't have a 33 week let then ask them to look at the letter from the Head Warden and DSU President which says that there won't be any compulsory 38 week lets in 2011/12.

Compulsory 38 week lets have been universal in Josephine Butler and the two Queen's colleges for some years now. They are also the required let in some individual blocks in other colleges (e.g. Deerness in Mildert) I don't think the letter changes those situations.

Sorry, I meant catered colleges.
When will I know what textbooks I will be needing?

What course? with some searching you can probably find out now but I would strongly strongly recommend not buying any books until you get here and then only getting them as you need them. It will save you lots of money.

This.

If you need text books you'll probably be sent a reading list after your offer has been officially confirmed (so post exams) iirc. But don't buy them unless you want them anyway, or wait until you get here and you need them. You'll probably be able to just use the library.

Is a reading list for the English literature course normally sent out in advance? I figured it might be a good idea to get some reading out of the way over the summer so as to have a bit less of a rush during the term!
And do they normally recommend specific editions of novels/plays/poetry or is any one fine?
How will I know (and when) if I've been allotted an ensuite room at Mildert? Any idea? I'm doing my masters in Psychology and got accepted into Mildert!

I don't think they finalise accommodation until after the exam results come out, though I could be wrong. If you want to be sure, drop them an email.

I'm an international student, my results are already out but I'm guessing results coming out in the England applies to all students!
Hi, I hope this hasnt already been asked, I ran a search and didn't find anything! And its also an extremely silly question but I'm very worried if there are gonna be any reasonably priced beauty salons and the like at Durham? :\

You're post grad as well I assume, if you're doing a masters in Psychology? In which case I'm afraid I don't know, you'd be best off contacting the college if you want to know.
But also, you can ignore the 'you won't find out until after results' comments you'll get as that applies to undergrads. (If I'm mistaken and you mean you're doing a 4 year undergrad course, you won't find out until August, and you're very unlikely to get an ensuite room)

Hi, thanks for that. Yeah, I'm a grad student. And I already got my results but need to let Durham know so that my offer can become unconditional. However, I filled out my college membership and accommodation form more than a month ago stating my preferences so I'm hoping that will count?
Hiya  hopefully go to Durham this October.

I just had a question, unfortunately I need a week off uni to attend two weddings that I can't miss. Anyone know what the uni's policy on term time leave is? Not sure how this works at university :/

Thank you

Hello!
Hopefully I will attend Durham in October and I would like to ask if there is a pet friendly college.
I have a small dog (chihuahua) and I would like to know if I can bring him with me in a college or at least can visit me some times!

Pets are specifically against the tenancy agreements in all colleges, to have one in your room would be breaking it.
I'm bringing my dog too, but no university accommodation allows pets. You and I will just have to find pet friendly rooms to let.

Have you done any search about private accommodation? I believe it won't be easy to find pet friendly rooms..and I am afraid I will have to leave my little dog to my parents:frown:
I'm looking to apply to Durham for Theology but the gowns are freaking me out a bit!

How much do they tend to cost and where do you buy them?

Thanks

You don't need a gown at all if you apply to a college that isn't "gowned".
