@Awoodrow2 and @Amy124 thanks for that

Another question; I have heard that if you are studying maths then you aren't allowed to use a graphical calculator (such as a Caso fx-9750GII, which I used during my A-Levels). Is this true? Are you allowed scientfic calculators or just basic models?

Thanks again

A lot of the maths exams don't allow you to use a calculator at all. For those that do:

Durham Maths Exam Info Website
Students are not allowed to take to an examination any calculator which

is programmable, or
can display graphics, or
has facilities for text storage, or
has facilities for communications, or
can evaluate integrals, or
can solve linear equations.

Physics is the same, only normal scientific calculators allowed no graphical ones. The standard Casio school one is pretty much what everyone uses even though it does have a memory function it is tolerated by the uni.

Presumably because the memory function can only store individual numbers and nothing useful.

Say I applied to a college that is described as catered, would I have to pay the fee for a catered room/college even if I just wanted to live in that college, albeit self catered?

I hope that makes sense!

Also, would you say it's funner being self catered or catered?

Fully catered colleges do not have the option or facilities to be self catered, some colleges (eg. cuths) offer a choice and have different fees depending on which you pick.

If you apply to a catered college, you will not have the option to not pay for the catering, as far as I'm aware.

I really liked being catered for - it meant everyone in college ate together at the same time, so you could always be with different people, breakfasts are AWESOME compared to normal student ones, and it got me to eat a much wider range of food than I normally would have.

Oh cool thanks.. but doesn't it seem more fun and independent to cook for yourself and make a mess than having set meal times.. and what happens when you are really busy and miss the allocated time for lunch/dinner?

Thats what 2nd year is for when you live out, personally I only missed 1 or 2 meals a term and on those days thats what takeaway pizza is for! If your organised and know your gonna miss it you can order 'late dinner' which is basically just them leaving a plate of food out for you to microwave.

Independent = awkward and time-consuming. If you really get the urge, you can do some baking in one of the college kitchens in your spare time, but otherwise it just means you have more time to do the rest of the fun things here.
I'm a pretty busy guy (involved in five different societies, doing a science subject), and I don't think I missed a single meal unless I was busy sleeping due to illness or a lie-in.

Exactly! You just make sure you plan ahead; college also do pack meals, which can be a bit irritating to order, but if you ask for a 'food pack' for when you're away for a weekend, they give you SO MUCH FOOD. I've had friends who seriously couldn't get rid of it all for a week.

I was catered, I rarely missed meals and when I did it was usually out of choice (all options were horrible). Oh but I did have a tutorial on a Thursday and Friday which happened when lunch was so I could never get lunch those days but id walk past a Peters on the way home anyway so it was all good :awesome:
Ive never heard of this late meal thing either!? It only happened on weekends in like the last term which was extremely stupid (especially when dinner used to be at 5 during the snow and people would have lectures or whatever until 6 - at which point dinner had ended).

Maybe late dinner was just a Collingwood thing then although it was never very good far better to just use the colleges pizza shop.
What happens if u fail more than one core module? Are u allowed to resit the failed modules next year or is it a straight kick out? I'm currently waiting for resit results and dunno if I should message other unis meanwhile :s-smilie:

Slightly confused what you mean? Are you currently at uni and have potentially failed 2 of your resits? What year is it in?

Also slightly confused. I'm fairly sure you're saying that you're currently at Durham, in which case I'm confused as to what you'd be messaging other universities about.

If you're failing a core module on a resit, that means that you've failed it twice in a row - I expect that'd be a straight kick, but I really don't know.

What kind of football boots should I bring to Durham: Soft ground (studs) or firm ground (blades)?

I'm worried about how much Durham colleges seem to love shared accommodation! Sounds awful. Which college has the best accommodation? and least chance of getting a twin room? I suppose the departments the same so the main thing for me is accommodation!

I've gotten into St Cuths and they give you a LOT of option about being catered/not catered and also have single self-catered flats where you share a kitchen and a bathroom more like "typical" uni halls. I'm yet to have my accomodation confirmed though eep, so hoping not to have a shared room!

I think if you apply for catered then you don't usually get the cooking facilities - you'll be getting breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday of the week so you won't be provided with a proper kitchen with oven...you might get a little space with a microwave but probably not the full works of a kitchen. Therefore you wouldn't be able to just ask to not be catered for and stay in that accomodation.

Not 100% on this as I'm not there yet would be good if someone could correct me about whether you still get the cooking facilities in catered? Personally I have applied for self catered with a meals package but as far as I am aware they only do that at Cuth's.

Yep, Im currently at the uni, jus finished first year. And I may have failed 2 modules. I've gotta message other unis to see if they would take me in the event of me being kicked out. Any tips on what to say lol?

In colleges where they are fully catered, you still usually get access to a fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave. Some have ovens/hobs but not many. Hope this helps!
