Don't worry, you could always ask Durham to restart you on another course, same college etc. I've heard of that being done - one girl in my college went from law to teaching (can't remember the proper name of the course). So it will be ok!

Yep, Im currently at the uni, jus finished first year. And I may have failed 2 modules. I've gotta message other unis to see if they would take me in the event of me being kicked out. Any tips on what to say lol?

Im in the same situation, ive started having a look around for entry requirements for 2012 entry but havent started doing anything yet.

Its annoying how resits happen after clearing vacancies are released, means I cant really do anything this year apart from apply for 2012 entry (with the fee increase).

What happens if u fail more than one core module? Are u allowed to resit the failed modules next year or is it a straight kick out? I'm currently waiting for resit results and dunno if I should message other unis meanwhile :s-smilie:

You should probably ask yourself why you're failing the modules. If you're really struggling with the course you might want to change courses anyway. If you had mitigating circumstances, you would obviously plead these. If it's just that you weren't trying very hard, you might want to take a year out, get a boring job and re-think what you want.

Your other option might be to repeat a year. I've heard of people doing this but you'd need to convince the uni that you can do better if they give you another go - and you've obviously got the cost of another year.
I read that some students received a freshers pack. Does one have to order it? Do international students get one too?
I tried to find a freshers week schedule, but DSU website has very little information on it, will they update it eventually?

Im pretty sure your college send out the freshers pack with all the details in it, im not sure about international students but I assume you do receive one. It might take a little longer for it to reach you though but it might be worth contacting your college?

Does anyone know if they assign tutorial times or if we just pick depending on when we can make it ? (This is for maths)

What kind of football boots should I bring to Durham: Soft ground (studs) or firm ground (blades)?

Might as well bring both because sometimes you'll play/train on a 3G rubber crumb pitch, where you can't use metal studs.

Im not entirely sure for Maths but for CS youre assigned to a time but if you cant make it you are free to go to any that week, just remember to sign in (if you have to).

For Maths, you are allocated a tutorial group for each module you take. Each tutorial group has a specific time in the week when their tutorial is. If a tutorial you've been assigned to clashes with something else you fill out a form and tell them all the tutorials groups you CAN do, and you'll be put into one of those. You don't really get much choice in it.

hmm I had a long think about it and I realised that I dint do my best and wasnt motivated enough about the 2 modules I've potentially failed. But I managed to get 2 firsts and did ok in the rest (there were 6). The course lets u choose modules in second year and they look great to me, so I see myself doing well. The option of a gap year isnt attractive as I'd rather be at uni.

I joined the uni through Clearing with a grade below the typical offer (talk about second chances!)...is that a good or bad sign?

What about doing the same course or repeating only the failed modules? Cuz its only the 2 modules in first year that I have a problem with. And I joined the uni through Clearing with a grade below the typical offer (talk about second chances!)...is that a good or bad sign?

It really is! Although being international, I've got a bit of a chance...but there's only 4 days between results and the end of Clearing :s-smilie:

To be brutally honest, it's probably going to make it less likely they'll let you repeat the year and I have only heard of Durham letting someone repeat the whole year under extremely trying circumstances - 3/4 of her grandparents were killed in a car crash the week before her exams began and she was still having trouble coping at the time of resits. Have you spoken to the uni yet or your college? Do you give anything else to the college that you could use to say you were even slightly indispensible?

Are you in any societies or good at any sports? Sorry which course do you take again? Are there any more sympathetic lecturers or seminar/tutorial leaders you get on with who you could email for advice?

Im in Stockton Campus, so havent been in any societies and the sports Im good at are at Durham! I am doing Business Finance and the two modules I've potentially failed are not core, but obviously I cant fail more than 1 in order to progress to year 2. hmm I could definitely try that
Does anyone know if there are any second-hand furniture shops in Durham? I'm moving into an unfurnished house and would really like to find something to sit and sleep on for a decent price.
Reply 3477
Urm I dont know of any, there might be 1 in the indoor market, however if you check notice boats in colleges and departments you'll often find adds from students who have moved back into college and are selling furniture, I for instance will probably have a desk for sale as I dont think it'll fit in my new house. Also try Gum tree.
My problem is delivery. Would like to find a shop that can get bulky stuff to my house, for I am not strong enough to carry anything big for a few miles and my car can maybe carry a chair maximum
