Hey! I've got an offer for Psychology, and was just wondering what the average week of a first year Psych student at Durham is like? As in lectures etc..?

My flatmate does Psychology, I'll ask her and post tomorrow with an answer.

Very little work in comparision to other sciences (around 8 hours a week lectures, plus work outside). You do have to choose two other modules from other depts though, so your total obviously depends on them.

The other thing is everything in the first year is assessed by MCQs, so its really piss. The whole thing is a bit of a joke tbh.

Well that sounds decent! Thank you very much

I asked this in another thread but this is probably a better place for it:

I have a question about Caslte - perhaps a current Castle person could answer it.

Can I play my guitar plugged in when I want to (i mean in the day/ evening, not at 2am), or does it depend which accomodation I end up in? Wouldn't be horrendously loud.

There's nothing stopping you, but it depends on your neighbours, doesn't it? Ask them if they mind. Actually, I believe we have some music practice rooms somewhere which you could use, but as I'm not a very musical person I know nothing about them.

Of course, I'd never do it if it annoyed someone. I was just wondering if there were any rules about it. Thanks

I think the only rule is no noise after 11pm.

Like anyone follows it.

You could prob get away with it at a decent time, I've played my cello in my room before and nobody has been upset about it, despite the fact I'm terrible

And yes, fields is right, we have 2 music practise rooms and a recording studio that have recently been refurbished, and you can check the key out from the porters whenever you like, they have electric pianos in them as well, which is cool

I've been invited for interview + overnight stay on 19th/20th Feb. What would be a good time to arrive?

Hi,

I have an offer for English at Durham and was just wondering if any current students could advise me on when the first term is likely to start (or, well, when students arrive for freshers week)? My ucas claims it is the 1st of October, but I am supposing that is just an estimate or rounded-up to the nearest month?

Thanks.

Reply 411

well according to http://www.dur.ac.uk/dates the first day of term is the 8th Oct. Which is the first wednesday.

Freshers normally arrive the weekend before that, which will be the 4th or 5th.

Thanks!

Anyone? I'd like to get this confirmation form off today, it's been sitting on my desk for a while now. :ta:

That's the thing, I have to specify a time

I was thinking about 4pm anyway so I'll put that. Thanks

My interviewees would usually get here before tea, so yeah about 4-5pm

2 questions:

1. I got a form from my college saying they regard me as overseas for fees purposes, which I am, but they wanted me to send them back a form to confirm this. Does anyone think it'd be rude for me to just email them? Only because it'd take a really long time to send a letter back (from Indonesia) and seems a bit of a waste given that I'm just confirming something they already know (the form only has a checkbox, no other details).

2. Does it snow lots in Durham? (stupid question, I'm guessing, but I just thought of it and really want to know:smile:)

Send the form back, but email them too to say that you've sent it and that it'll take a while to come through.

It doesn't snow that much here, and when it has during my time here it hasn't really settled. It does get really cold though.

This year is the only one of my 4 years where we haven't had snow that stuck.
