Hi, thanks for the info there is a fair bit to look at on your guide. It is really helpful. I think you have covered most things to be honest. Fantastic job on the guide. There are many things I wasn't sure of but know I know more about. Thanks again

Hi I was just wondering if anyone knew what to do if you are not going to live in college during your first year. I'm from the local area so will not need accommodation. Do I need to tell my college or will they automatically know this.

Thanks

Here's the relevant page:

If you wish to live out of college during your first year please notify your college that you do not require accommodation as soon as you receive details of your college allocation. Contact details for each college can be found on individual college websites.

Yea physical constraints don't seem to be taken into account. Each house is eligible for 2 permits for the zone you live in and the next nearest zone. Then its up to you to find somewhere to put it.

what happens if you apply for University college and you dont get in, do they try and put you in a similar college like a bailey college

or if you apply to a hill college and dont make it will they try and put you in another hill college?

many thanks
There are pools at Durham, so if your first choice doesn't accept you, your application Is handed to another college ( in that pool). Google the Durham application pools if you want to what they are exactly.

If you applied to University College (castle) you could be allocated any college as they are soooo oversubscribed.

Hi, just wondering if you can give me an idea of what to expect at post application days. Is it an all day event. They sound really good both at Durham city and Queens. Thanks

Actually, the system's changed now, and they no longer have the separate pools (the information on the AES page is out of date referring to college pools, while the Application Process page has changed to reflect that, but not sure further information has been added).

As far as I'm aware, they will try to place you in a similar college, but there's no guarantee that they'll be able to.

Hi,
Does anyone from Josephine Butler know what the deal is with overnight guests at the college?
I read somewhere on the website that you have to pay quite a bit of money for one night to have someone stay, is this true or do most students just sneak people in without paying? :P
Any feedback would be appreciated!

Here is the web address of where i got the information from http://www.dur.ac.uk/butler.college/undergraduate/fees/

Visitors and Guests
Visitors may be entertained in College from 08:00 to 23:00. You will be held responsible for the conduct and behaviour of your guests and the College reserves the right to require a guest to leave at any time or to refuse leave for a student to have a guest.
You may have a guest stay with you provided that this is for no more than three days in any two week period (unless by arrangement with the Operations Manager). Students must sign guests in at Reception, informing them of the guest name and period during which the guest is resident.

Or do none of the above and as long as the cleaners don't catch you (or you make friends with them and aren't ridiculous about it) be fine. A friend once had his mate stay for 3 weeks with no problems.
Anyone know if Maiden Castle gym users are allowed to use the showers, or are they just for sports teams?

I use a lot of spices, things like garlic powder, chili powder, cumin, ginger, etc.

I usually buy large bags - typically 500g (for comparison, the little jars that you see in Tesco are around 25g).

Anyway, supplies are running low, and I don't know where to get the bags. It's too expensive for me to use the little jars in Tesco - neither of the ones in the city centre, nor the large Gilesgate one, stock big spice bags.

Any ideas?

I asked my friend who's infamous for cooking properly, who suggests looking in the Indoor Market, or the Chinese Supermarket on North Road.
Hi,

I know I saw an advert/link for a university iPhone app around application time on the Durham University website. However, I've now forgotten what it was called and can no longer find it on the website

Does anyone else remember it? It was fairly new and only had certain features for Oxford, Durham, UCL etc.

The only apps I'm aware of/can find anything about related to Durham are;
- 'DU Guide' - "provides precise map locations for all the University's colleges, academic departments and service departments"
- a DSU android app that has probably been discontinued (was some kind of free offer they said they'd try out)
- and this mention "If you have an Apple iPhone please download our app using the following address: http://itunes.apple.com/app/du-open-day/id525237279?&mt=8. You can also link to this app from the main Open Day web page at www.durham.ac.uk/study/visit/preapplication/durham It will help you to navigate your way around and ensure you have all the information you need at your finger tip."

But the iTunes link just redirects me to the main page, and the Durham link doesn't mention an iPhone app at all.
After many google searches I've found it! Campus Life :: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/campus-life/id390476867?mt=8

Strange that the link disappeared but I was drawn to its audio notes feature.

Has anyone used this or DU Guide, reviews may be useful as come Sept/Oct I was surely be drowning in paper...
