I'd get in contact with them to ask, but I'd expect they'd have a large enough pool of grade 8 players that it'd be hard to audition as a grade 7. On the other hang, grade doesn't necessarily mean everything, and maybe you're good enough?

Also, even if you can't get in to the Palatinate Orchestra, Durham has a million and one other bands and orchestras that it'd be well worth brushing up on your playing for.

Okay thanks

I know DUOS is the top top orchestra so I was hoping Palatinate would let in some lower players, especially since you need so many strings.

I'll email them, although not sure if they'll reply over the summer.

You'll be surprised how many emails will get through during Summer. Even I check my student email often and I know I am not expecting anything.
Hi,
Please can someone give me a rough guide of how much subject books will cost in the first year of study for BSc Geology at Durham Uni. Thanks!

Not sure about Asia specifically, but you can view Durham's ethnicity statistics here https://www.dur.ac.uk/resources/ug.admissions/admindocuments/admincycle1112/1-5ApplicationsbyEthnicity-Summary.pdf
What kind of kitchen stuff (I'm thinking mugs, bowls etc.) and how much should you bring with you to a catered college? Thanks

I just brought a couple of mugs, a couple of glasses and a spoon, so i could get my coffee fix. What things you should bring depends on what kind of food you want to have besides college meals, so there's no need to bring loads of bowls and plates and cutlery if you only plan on eating college food and biscuits, for example.
Thank you

Bring a mini kettle for your room. Seriously my life in college was not complete until I purchased my own kettle and had access to tea and coffee within arms distance at all times. Also extremely sociable because people will keep knocking on your door asking for hot water. Well, sociable or annoying, there is a thin line depending on what time of the day they decide to knock (4:30am is not a nice time to knock for tea.)

That sounds great but I thought there was a ban on kettles in rooms because of the power requirements? :s-smilie: Hoping to go to Collingwood btw

There is a ban but it is widely ignored (at castle anyway) and if you're pleasant to the cleaners, I can't imagine you'll have any trouble with it. If anyone says anything, just remove it. I'd say that it's definitely worth a try
Hi, I'm going to be studying Philosophy at St John's  This might sound a bit silly but I'm an international student and didn't realise that 'gowned formal dinners' meant academic gowns  what do the girls usually wear under that then? Also, are we allowed to bring a date from another college? Does St John's allow guests? I've read that it's usually a 'don't ask don't tell' thing, but my partner will be attending Durham with me and I foresee more than just a few sleepovers, heh. Can students from other colleges eat at other dining halls? Sorry for the questions!

Oh ok! Thanks ) I take it it's a good idea to stay on good terms with the cleaners...

I'm planning on applying for Maths at Durham and after looking on the website I've noticed that they ask for UMS marks of all Maths and Further Maths modules. What kind of scores are they looking for? My January scores were 100, 97 & 97 which I'm assuming are fine but I'm not as confident with the UMS marks of my June exams :s-smilie:

A somewhat "easy" way of getting into Maths at Durham is through the Natural Sciences route. For that matter its also a good route into any of the main science subjects. Grades at A-Level are perhaps a little higher but are good for people who are considering Maths but haven't taken Further Maths for example.

I had no idea what I wanted to do at uni to be honest so I applied to Durham for Natural Sciences seeing how flexible the course was. I ended up doing modules in Maths, Economics, Physics and Computer Science over my four years although mainly coming out with Maths and Economics (whats on my degree certificate). Note I didn't have Further Maths at AS or A-Lvl so Natural Sciences was the only way to do Maths for me.
Why is the wearing of gowns discouraged at most Hill Colleges even for matriculation and may one wear a gown anyway even though their college isn't considered "gowned"? The reason I'm asking is because I intend to go to evensong at the Cathedral often and since I shall have a gown, I feel that I should be able to wear it for matriculation and/or formals.
