Thank you both. If Mildert has the books I need, it'd be best to loan from there, as I can keep them longer.

As for the bedding, yes I am bringing one or two covers, but it's all I can fit in a suitcase as I'm flying from Rome!
Do you mean delivery to Wilkinson's or Tesco? I arrive on the 25th, I suppose I can check on the website and either order in the morning to pick up in the afternoon, or go a night with a sleeping bag and buy everything the next day.
How far away is the big tesco?

You can still get books recalled from the Mildert library, though! I'm not really a fan of the recall system... one of my friends borrowed a book and had it recalled the next day :s-smilie: so don't totally rely on this option unless there are dozens of copies of your course book!

Wilkinson's has a delivery to store option; I don't know whether Tesco does. There are actually three Tescos; the one normally referred to as 'big Tesco' is in Market Square, in the centre of town, but it's not big at all  The retail park in Belmont (Tesco, Argos) is about three miles away from Mildert, so a couple of hours round trip.

The "big" Tesco was always the one in Gilesgate Moor/Dragonville (Belmont's a bit further up, the other side of the A1) as that's the hypermarket. It is big.

Unless it's changed now the one at the Market is open, but seems a bit silly people calling a Tesco Metro, the smaller shop, the "big" Tesco.

And by bus about 40 minutes, less if timed right. Bus to the bus station, then the 20 to Tesco.

It's bigger than the one on North Road, I guess that's where it came from - I'm pretty sure I've only heard 'big Tesco' referring to Market Square, and Belmont or Dragonville for the other. Although yeah, you're right, it's not quite Belmont.

So essentially I'd better make friends with someone with a car

Seriously, is the "hypermarket" in Gilesgate Moor easier to reach than Belmont?
Maybe I could have everything shipped directly at college -- would they do that? Basically like a home delivery.

And the recall system is ridiculous... just because someone new needs the book, doesn't mean I need it less  I suppose there's always amazon or cheap books websites.

Sorry for the confusion, the shops in Gilesgate Moor are what I was referring to when I mentioned Belmont, so about an hour's walk/40 minutes on the bus

You can get Amazon etc. deliveries to college, but not Tesco groceries (not sure about things like duvets). I assume Wilkinsons deliveries are fine too. You'd need to collect it from college reception using your campus card.

It's worth having a good personal library. You never know when you may need them. Plus if you buy them, you can always sell them when your done with them. I've just finished first year and I already have a shelf and and a half of books.

Another thing to remember is getting the right edition of books. Departments may expect you to own the current edition, which for particular subjects can cost £40 a book. The libraries tend to have older editions, and if your lucky one or two up to date versions. You are also limited to only 20 books, which for six modules over the course of a year is difficult.

Tends to depend on your preferences and on the lecturer - some will just write on the board and expect you to copy it down, while others will have a variety of handouts.

Generally speaking, yes, what you're expecting is probably the most common and effective note-taking/organising system. It allows plenty of room for annotations, revisions, and including unexpected handouts.

Thank you so much Helioghost, you're a legend! Okk so I think I'll stick to the usual system, that's great!

Huh, maybe it depends on where you live? I've been based on the Hill for my 4 years (Trevs and Neville's Cross), and to pretty much everyone I spoke to, Market Square was just "Tesco", Dragonville was "Big Tesco", and North Road was largely forgotten about, since it wasn't any closer than Market Square, and had less stuff in it.

Based on that, you don't live in the viaduct area, do you?

I agree with this. North Road Tesco is "North Road Tesco". Tesco is Market Square and Big Tesco is the one in Gilesgate.

Actually, isn't North Road "Little Tesco"? I really didn't go to it often at all. ><

"Little Tesco", "Small Tesco", "North Road Tesco" - All one and the same. Very interchangeable.
If a module is capped at 60, will they absolutely definitely not let anymore people than that take it? If it's oversubscribed, how do they decide which people get to take it, is it first come first served? Thanks

Haha, it probably just depends on who you talk to then, the naming of the various Tescos great and small doesn't come up in conversation that often  I lived in the Viaduct in second year (didn't have many friends there though), so I went to North Road loads of times when I couldn't be bothered to walk the extra few minutes to Market Square. I'm in Neville's Cross this year though.
Hi, sorry to bother you all so much but I have two more questions... Do you get given desk lamps at Collingwood and if you have a printer in your room as well as a laptop, would you need two Ethernet cables? Thank you!

I guess it depends on the model, but I wasn't aware that any printer needed an ethernet cable?

There are loads of shops in town that sell bedding. You really should be able to find one without getting a bus.

If you're able to carry a sleeping bag, why not bring your own bedding instead?

Your other option is to order it online and get it delivered to your college. People get stuff delivered to college all the time.
Just a few questions after reading Freshers handbook (I'm staying in Hatfield college if it makes a difference)

1. Am I allowed to bring a mini kettle for my bedroom? (The freshers handbook only mentions no toasters/ microwaves)

2. What are other essentials out of the following: ironing board, clothes drying rack, laundry bag, desk lamp (or are any of these provided?)

3. Within Hatfield, I'm sure I've read that wifi can be only be used in study areas and libraries but CAN'T be accessed from bedrooms... How do I browse the internet from my bedroom? I have a Macbook - does this mean I will have to buy a thunderbolt-ethernet cable adapter to use that? Will internet work in the bedroom then?

4. Will I always be guaranteed a place at my own Formal dinners within Hatfield since I'm catered accommodation? (The sentence "sign up for formal a few days in advance - places are first come first served" has scared me a bit)

5. Can any Anthropology students tell me the names/author of the books I'll need for the core modules? (Just saw a comment that you can view the available library books online... Anthropology is my subject - http://library.dur.ac.uk/search/d?SEARCH=anthropology&SUBMIT=Search)

I don't know about Hatfield specifically, but going on general knowledge:

1) No, kettles aren't allowed either - if you do a bit of searching, you should be able to find the regulations for where you're staying.

2) You'll have ironing facilities and a desk lamp, but the desk lamp may be **** - bringing your own can be very nice. You'll need to buy your own drying rack, and laundry bag.

3) The information about en-suite online can be found here: https://www.dur.ac.uk/cis/esol/ - the college should provide an ethernet cable (or you can buy one from the markey). I'll be confused if you need an adaptor, even for mac.

4) No, you won't be guaranteed a place at Formal, but if you miss sign up, an alternative dinner will be provided earlier than normal.

5) Try checking the descriptions of your modules online (e.g. the Module Handbook) - the reading lists should be there.
Where does a Durham student go to check out a rash on their skin?
