Okay, thanks
I'm guessing they're not too fussy on length just so long as it's not indecent?

They're not fussy at all, but as you are going to be in the cathedral it is probably best to think not too far above the knee. Smart trousers are OK too.
Basically, the kind of thing you might wear for your graduation, but not too posh. You don't need to buy anything special, just your usual smart-ish stuff is fine.

You might want to bear in mind that it will be a long walk in Durham in October. Could be a bit chilly.
Hey guys, does anyone know what you have to put in as the mail details to get emails on your iPhone? I've tried what it says on the CIS FAQ but I think it might be out of date because it didn't work :frown: Thanks!!
Oh dear.. I haven't received a proper reply from as12... I haven't been signed up to the DUO system, but I just found out about some pre-university work for chemists!?!?!:

Material relevant to all students who intend to take Core Chemistry 1A (CHEM1078) & Practical Chemistry 1A (CHEM1087) as part of a Chemistry or Natural Sciences degree, or as an elective module, will be posted in the Chemistry Freshers' area of the university's virtual learning environment (DUO) at duo.dur.ac.uk . This includes information about the Department and some pre-university study. Your login details for DUO should be provided to you by the university student registry office as part of the enrolment and registration process. Students who have accepted, and met the terms of, an offer through UCAS for Chemistry degrees should be automatically enrolled in the Chemistry Freshers' area; Natural Sciences students need to inform the director of the Natural Sciences degree of their desire to take Chemistry modules.

I hope the work doesn't take too long, to complete; it looks like I will have to start chasing up the enrollment people!

Could anyone tell mewhere the theology lectures are held?

There's a module I'd like to take and the timetable says "D/ER247".
If I'm not mistaken, D is supposed to be Dawson (which is on the science site), but ER is Elvet Riverside. So I don't know which one it is.

Also, one of my core Anthro lectures in in Dawson from 13 to 13.45.
This other theology module would be at 14 on the same day -- would I make it in 15 minutes from the Science Site down to Elvet Riverside? (I'm asking because I don't know if lectures usually run a bit late).

I hope I can sort it out, I really like the sound of the theology module!

Yeah you can make it from the science site to ER in 10 minutes  It wont just be you wholl be late if they do finish late and you have to get to another lecture, its the same for everyone but the lecturers will realise this and wait for most people before they begin (or theyll be late themselves)

There is something on the website about it, I cant remember where to find it though. It says something about using the first part of the URL when you log onto the Office 365 site.

Anyway, on my phone:
Its a Microsoft Exchange account
Email as your email address.
Server is from the URL you log into on your laptop e.g. abcd1234.outlook.com (replacing abcd1234 with the proper value in the address bar)
Domain leave blank
Username is your CIS username with durham.ac.uk at the end (@durham.ac.uk)
Password is your CIS password
Use SSL as ON.

And I think thats it.

Hey. Maths student at Trevs here starting this year. Just a few quick questions:
1. Is there wireless internet in the room. I was planning on bringing a tablet as my computer and if there isn't this plan will obviously need some rethinking.
2. I haven't received any information pack from the department. Is there any reading/work I need to have done before I arrive? Maths students looking at you here.
3. Is there any interaction between colleges during freshers week? My girlfriend is at a different college so are a bit curious.
4. Is there anyway that I could contact other people in my college/course before uni?
Many thanks
Josh

1. As a general rule, no. I don't know specifically about trevs, but at grey there was wireless in places like the jcr, so if you lived close enough to the main bit of college you could occasionally get a very weak connection from there, but I wouldn't recommend relying on it. They'll give you an ethernet cable though, so you might still be able to use your tablet if it'll connect to that.

2. When I started 3 years ago, there was an information pack sent out- mainly giving information about available first year modules, and information about a diagnostic test online, to give you an idea of whether it'd be useful to go to catch up lectures on A level stuff that maybe you hadn't covered with your exam board etc. I've no idea if they do this any more though

3. Not specifically. There are plenty of things that are uni-wide: the freshers' fair, freshers' ball (if that still happens), college nights out often end up in the same place as there are a limited number of clubs etc, but on the whole the first week is mainly college-centric, but of course you don't have to follow their timetable completely, if you want to meet up with your girlfriend

4. The best thing i can think of is facebook groups. There's likely to be a group for trevs freshers somewhere if you search for it; i doubt there'll be a maths group though
Edit: here's the link to the trevs one: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TrevsFreshers2013/
Hope that helps

Specifically on this point, as a Trevelyanite, I can tell you that, unfortunately, there isn't :-(

Every room has an ethernet cable and there is wireless internet in public spaces such as the bar, the library, and the undercroft. If you get a room close enough to one of these areas, however, you can pick up the wireless :-)
Hey, can anyone tell me if there's any provision for instrumental lessons within the uni? thanks

I'm afraid I don't *think* there is. Best bet is to try and find another student who's willing to tutor you.

Ok, that's cool! Do you know if there's anyone around here who studies music and could let me know how willing the music department might be to help me find an accompanist?

I believe Grey is a "gowns" college, so whatever you wear will have your undergrad gown on top of it. a lot of people wear black under their gown, so a plain black dress or a skirt and shirt would be fine. One tip, wear shoes you can actually walk in, as matriculation can involve walking some distance over cobbles - not easy in heels!

Hi, I was wondering this too and I'm at St Cuths so don't have a gown. What do girls wear when this is the case?

I know this has been discussed already, but. Let's talk shared bathrooms vs ensuite for a moment.

I have some, erm, intestine issues and I think sharing would be extremely uncomfortable. Since I'm being treated for this, I have medical evidence, and I asked for an ensuite on my college form.

Now though, I'm having second thoughts, as many people have told me what a great socializing opportunity it is and blah blah blah. I'm not sure how much bonding can be experienced over a toilet stall, but I may be wrong. Will I "miss out"? It seems like a stretch to me, but I'm worring I'll live like a recluse because I have my own bathroom :P

Also: are all bathrooms cleaned by the cleaning people? thanks

Mildert, IIRC?

No, you won't miss out just because of having an en-suite unless you're REALLY shy and scared to come out of your room! Mealtimes are way more important for meeting people.

(Also, if you're going to be put in what was the freshers' ensuite corridor last year - lucky! That's definitely the best set of rooms in Mildert, and they've got proper kitchens, unlike some of the other blocks.)

Your en-suite will be cleaned once a fortnight, compared to three times a week for the shared bathrooms.

re. question above about matriculation clothes for non-gowned colleges: just something smart/formal. Girls wear smart dresses, usually dark colours, or blouses and skirts/trousers.

Correct, Mildert!
I am shy, but I certainly don't plan to lock myself inside

Another question. They asked a letter plus medical evidence for my request.
How detailed is too detailed? My issues are abdominal and, well, it's not pretty. Is there some sort of etiquette? X'D
It is going to be marked as confidential, but I don't know if they expect to be filled in on the medical details? I think so, but I don't want to shock anyone with, erm, candor.

I had to provide a letter from my doctor about a reason I gave for a single room. I think the mere fact that you have a doctor who is prepared to give you a letter about it is generally enough. I can't imagine they'd want details but it would help if the doctor actually mentions that having a private, very handy toilet would be advantageous.
