I'm just wondering about the fines I'll end up with when I keep forgetting to take books back to the main library. Is it really a pound for every day you are late in handing them back?

Surely the main texts will be floating around amongst the other English folk at castle... I hope so

Yup its a quid a day, though you get an email if you forget to hand it in (the flaw in the logic being that you have already paid your first quid... :frown: ) Longer loan books you get a reminder a few days before the book is due. Though to be fair you will be in there often enough to not have to go out of the way to return books, I suspect...

I just revel in being a science student and not needing any books... :p:

Yes. It is evil. I do quite a lot of last-minute online renewing at five minutes to midnight.

It takes 10 minutes to walk from Castle too the main library, I can't believe you're complaining about this. Going once a day to get/return books is hardly a massive inconvenience, is it?

Not complaining, just wondering what Palace Green Library is for.

generic hybrid - what books, apart from the ones on the syllabus, do you use? I'm just imagining like armfuls of big old tomes! haha.
My ex-housemate used palace green library all the time and she studied english and music. So I suppose you have a 50% chance, sort of

Palace Green Library is supposed to be closing at some point in the near future anyway, isn't it?
Yeah I had heard that, but wasn't arsed in any way whatsoever and so didn't listen to when or why

How rude! Dammit... It's pretty and old. What're they going to do with it?
In fairness Reblet if they closed down the main library I don't think I would be personally bothered either

Turn it into a world hertage site tourist information centre, and move all the books to the science site. There is a group kicking around somewhere on facebook protesting about it, coming to think of it I joined it...

I think moving the music dept up the hill is a REALLY bad plan. At the mo it benefits massively from being in the town centre as they have concerts at lunchtime nearly every day and whatnot. These will be sorely underattended if they are hed on the hill, because as I understand it, atm, a lot of tourists wander into the concerts while they're up on Palace Green...the uni is stupid, and I am not giving them any more of my money after i graduate.

Bloody tourists. They get everything good... Not sure what, but they probably do...

Yeah, but you're a physics student. :p:

I have to check out lots of exciting literary criticism for essays and revision and that sort of thing.

The university are now developing a policy of giving up their best buildings and ignoring their heritage...Palace Green, SPA...

Don't know if this is the right place for this question- but before I call/ write to Durham I figured I'd see if anyone here could help me out.
I have a AAA offer from Cambridge and a AAA offer from Durham (Natural Sciences). Cambridge is my firm, but I really really want Durham as my insurance. I know that soudns ridiculous considering if I get the three A's I'll go to Cambridge; but I've heard a lot of people say that sometimes Durham will take you even if you don't make their offer (especially for this course as you can be transferred to Combined Social Sciences which has a lower expected offer of AAB.) Is this true? So, if I don't get the three A's is there still a good chance Durham will want me?
Also, is it even possible to have an insurance choice with the same offer as your firm choice?
Yes it is possible to pick the same offers for firm and insurance, whether you think that's wise or not is up to you. Probably worth contacting Durham to see if they'll A. lower your offer B. agree to take you even if you miss the offer.

I'm not entirely sure. It will be up to the university obviously. I had an offer of ABB to study philosophy at Durham (I was predicted AAB). I only got 3 Bs though largely due to illness. When I phoned Durham up on results day I was told that "They never let people on a course who fall short of the requirements". I then explained I had been genuinely unwell throught sixth form. Her reply was "Because we are over-subscribed at Durham, we don't allow for mitigating circumstances". I eventually kept nagging her to put me onto an admissions tutor or whoever. They agreed to let me on, on the condition that I provide them with medical evidence. I did, and I got onto the course (it took a fair bit of pleading with them though on results day!)

Anyway this was my case, they may have let me on only because of mitigating circumstances so if you fall short and there's no medical or personal reasons I wouldn't fancy your chances, no.

But, as you say, the CSS course has an ABB entry requirement, and that course has space, they may well let you on. I certainly wouldn't bank on it, they seemed to be very tough in my dealings.

It's worth trying, particularly if you feel confident getting 3 As anyway.

Sorry for the long post. I'm quite unsure whether this is any real help to you, I can do nothing but outline my case to you.

If you follow UPsilamba's advice, and ask Durham if they will accept you with a B, and they tell you yes, make sure you get a written letter of confirmation. Durham is notorious for their lack of organisation and for losing track of things.

Probably not a smart move. If you end up with AAB, they might let you in anyway, but then again, they might not, in which case you'd be slightly ****ed.
