What is the standard of the football team like at Durham? I saw on the team's website that if you consider yourself of a good standard you should email them, but how good is a 'good' standard? Sorry if this sounds a little vague haha.

Playing at a county level. If your interested in playing for the University then you will probably be rather committed and/or talented. I'd say this applies to most team sports.

Nice one, thanks  IF I get an offer, this is one of the things I'm most excited about.

I'm hoping someone who has already graduated can help me - We've just been told that there's a graduation dinner in college on 2nd and 3rd of July. My actually graduation is on the1st so it would mean the family staying another night in a hotel. Does everyone go to these college meals? What are they like? Is it worth staying an extra night?

Your parents could could stay in college (or at least they can at Trevs). This is a very convenient option in many ways (and cheaper than a hotel?).
Quick question: I received an offer for PPE, college allocation pending. Could it be that I am allocated to a Hill college as a PPE student? That worries me, because my courses would be a considerably long walk away, as opposed to when I would be in a Bailey college. Thanks!
No colleges have been allocated yet, so everyone gets that message  The allocation is soon though so it shouldn't be too long before you find out.
If you could describe the uni in 3 words how would you and why?

When do we start applying for accommodation? Is it after the college allocation or after results day?

After results day and you have confirmed your place there through meeting your offer

Yeah, all Durham colleges have students of every subject. Durham is a small city though so no walk is too far. Plus walking with friends is great fun =)

OK that is good to hear! The Hill colleges are in Stockton, right?

The Hill colleges are the post-war colleges south/south west of the city centre (e.g. Aidan's, St Mary's, Trev's, Grey, Collingwood). There are only two colleges in Stockton (Stephenson and John Snow). You will not be allocated to a Stockton college if based in Durham.

If you were based in Stockton you'd have more than a long walk!

The Hill colleges are actually generally closer to the science site (including Main Library and student services) and to some of your departments/lectures (e.g. the Al-Qasimi Building which is where the School of Government is situated) than Bailey colleges. The University's generally been moving that way out of the city for years now. The only things still left in the city centre is Elvet Riverside and a few humanities departments (where you may not even have your teaching sessions). Oh, and DSU.

Oh that handy.

Do you know if it's straight after the results day or if they'll give you some notice to when after the results day they'll start accepting applications?

They'll give you info about it nearer the time and a pack containing accommodation-y stuff should come in the post after you confirm your place
This sounds a little silly, but does it snow lots in Durham? And is just cold generally?

Average daily temperatures during December and January vary from about minimum of 3 degrees to average high of around 7 degrees C.

The UK as a whole doesn't get much snow. Winters are generally relatively mild. Even when we did have bad winters in 2009 and 2010 Durham was no worse hit than any other part of the country, including the south.

Thanks
I'm from Cornwall so Durham is regarded as practically the North Pole. Good to know it's not that bad!

Not sure what you mean by applying for accommodation. Your allocated college IS your accommodation. You don't apply for it again. You do however get to state some preferences about rooms etc. but you're still not "applying" for anything. You're just letting them know what your preferences are regarding share/single, sleeping habits, interests etc. Think the only exception is Cuth's where there is a range of accommodation types/locations.

Again, you're not applying for anything. On results day, if you meet your offer your college will send you a pack. It will include a room preference form but they are just preferences. You'll have a week or two to return them and then they'll allocate you a room based on what you asked for.

It's a bit colder but being in the east, it gets a lot less rain than other places in the west. Less rain, less cloud, less snow and more sunshine.

How possible would it be to switch from chemistry to Natural Sciences (biology & chemistry)? Any experiences of this?

Not definite on whether I'd even want to do that if I could, but I'm curious. Also, I've got an offer for 2015 entry so I'm hoping things will still be quite up in the air for then. Especially as the main limit on flexibility within Durham's sciences seems to be spaces in the chemistry lab, one of which I already hold. Or is it the same, to a lesser extent, with spaces in biology labs?

I sent a email explaining why I wanted to change to both departments and to admissions department too. I then phoned them after a week (admissions) and they made the changes pretty quick. As long as same requirements for entry and competition for entry is similar they should allow.
