Hi all,

I'm looking at doing the Combined Honours in Arts and I understand that in your first year they want you to take 6 courses and gain 120 credits.

Do you take 6 courses irregardless or do you do 5 if one of them is worth 40 credits?

Would greatly appreciate an answer. Thanks.

You are only allowed to take 120, so yeah you would choose modules that add up to that. You can get, for example, 10 credit modules that only run for one term, and then 20 credit ones that run for a full year, etc.

Yeah, it says here that the induction week is 5th October so you are probably correct.

I am looking to apply to Durham this year for Law.

Could anyone studying/ looking to study law please give me some advice regarding personal statements etc and also how you're finding the course?

Also, i'm thinking of applying for Josephine butler college- any opinions?

Hey this may be too late, but pm me if you have any questions regarding law at Durham, as I'm currently just about to finish first year, so would be happy to help.

No, have a look at the post below mine which has a link to term dates. It's later than usual this year.

Hoping to gain a place at Durham for 2015 entry through adjustment and wondered if anyone knows or has experience of gaining an adjustment place at Durham for chemistry? Can someone let me know please as I need some advice on this! Thank you

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but as far as I am aware Durham doesn't take part in adjustment for the more popular courses, and so I imagine chemistry will be part of that group. It could be worth checking if you haven't already with the admissions team, so that you don't pin your hopes on something which isn't even an available option.

ok thank you
Hey all, international student here, I'll be matriculating this October. I just have a few questions regarding accommodation and the vacation periods in Durham.

I just wanted to ask if it's advisable to opt for college accommodation during the Christmas/ Easter vacations? Also, if we don't opt for college accommodation during vacations, are we required to leave the rooms right after the terms end or is there some sort of grace period?

I'll be looking to travel/interrail quite a bit while I'm in the UK, I suppose Easter and summer would be great times for it. Just wanted to ask if it was common for students to travel over the winter season as well?

It will depend on your college, so I'd contact them. The university has set pricing for accommodation, but I know some colleges differ in how they manage term time/ holiday time accommodation. At least in my experience most first years do go home over the vacations, so most people have the 29 week let (see link below) which does not include vacation accommodation. If you do want to stay over the vacation, there are the other packages, although you may have to switch rooms. Also depending on your college you might have the same room all year, or you might swap each term (every college is different!).

If you do want to leave for vacations (unless you specifically want to work, I'd advise it as Durham gets really quiet during holidays) your college will most likely provide some storage facilities (usually what are known as bed boxes - ie. there is space under the mattress in lockable boxes to put stuff in). In most colleges you wont be able to leave stuff out in your room (in the wardrobe for example) - everything either has to go with you, or get put in the storage. Usually people have to leave promptly, either on the last day of term or the next day in the morning. Different colleges have different policies again, but they can be quite strict about moving. You can sometimes pay a bit more to have an extra night.

With regards to travelling, yeah some students do travel! Most travel in summer (inter railing is very popular), and people go on holidays during other parts of the year too! Most people however spend the majority of holiday time at home though, and as exams are pretty much right after Easter lots of the Easter holiday is usually spent revising! Hope this helps

This is a link to the different accommodation packages, not all colleges offer all options. There are also links to an FAQ section which may answer other questions, but also you can ask here too! https://www.dur.ac.uk/undergraduate/accommodation/costs/

As DURHAM fans, please give your support in "The Russell group hurt/heal game" thread.
We need your daily votes to place Durham
Thanks and congrats
Could someone please briefly give me a few pros and cons about Trevelyan College from a Durham student's perspective? And also St John's? I don't mind if you don't attend either college, it'd be good to just garner an understanding of them outside of what the prospectus says..Thank you!

2ns edit: but in terms of how friendly people are/seem to be in these colleges and the closeness of the student communities versus the percentage of shared rooms on offer

Those are very different colleges, one is a large hill college (Trevs), and the other a small Bailey college - why have you singled these two out, and what are you looking for?

No one can comment on friendliness seeing as you'll be with other freshers, it depends on how friendly they are. I have not yet heard of someone having a bad experience with shared rooms.
What is the most ethnically diverse college? Which one do you recommend the most?
Hey all, October fresher here. I just wanted to ask when do we begin scheduling our tutorials on DUO? Also what is the process like (a bidding war)?

Thanks for your reply. Well, both colleges have chapels/multi-faith rooms (I'm Christian and I like the idea of having a place of worship nearby), catered formals and a low percentage of shared rooms (although maybe that's not a problem given what you've said). I thought both were small...but I'm less inclined to apply to Trevs now that you've said it's large. And I was lured by St John's traditional architecture.

I'm looking for a small college that's fairly old but with a low proportion of judgmental rahs (I know it's probably a fictitious stereotype but I'm afraid of being ostracized as a state-schooler)....thank you again!
