Hey all, October fresher here. I just wanted to ask when do we begin scheduling our tutorials on DUO? Also what is the process like (a bidding war)?

You don't register for your modules on DUO until after results day (from memory it wasn't until September). Your modules then have to be approved before you have to start worrying about signing up for seminars, which may be done online or on paper depending on your department and in any case won't happen until freshers' week at the very earliest.

Hi,

I have received an offer of AAA for Ancient, Medieval and Modern History. However, one of my exams did not go well today at all, and looking at my UMS I think I will be A/B borderline.
So I was just wondering if Durham would still accept me if I slipped one grade and got a B?
I don't know if it would make a difference that my course is not very popular...?

Thanks for your reply. Well, both colleges have chapels/multi-faith rooms (I'm Christian and I like the idea of having a place of worship nearby), catered formals and a low percentage of shared rooms (although maybe that's not a problem given what you've said). I thought both were small...but I'm less inclined to apply to Trevs now that you've said it's large. And I was lured by St John's traditional architecture.

I'm looking for a small college that's fairly old but with a low proportion of judgmental rahs (I know it's probably a fictitious stereotype but I'm afraid of being ostracized as a state-schooler)....thank you again!

It sounds like Johns may be exactly what you're looking for, but I can't tell you that there won't be any judgmental rahs as Durham does tend to attract those types. It's not fictitious, but they aren't necessarily that much of a problem, and can often be mostly avoided. They are harmless, mostly, just very irritating.
Hi all, I was wondering if anybody knows whether combined honours in arts are lenient at all when it comes to getting the A*? I hold an offer for English and Spanish (A*AA) and the majority of my exams are out of the way...not very sure how I've done! They were okay, nothing has been terrible so far but I'm just unsure about whether I've got the A* or not. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
what colleges would you recommend and why? im really looking for one that is ethnically diverse what is hard in terms of Durham

It varies on different courses and how many people missed offers etc. some allow you to miss by a grade others won't let you in even if it was a few UMS.

What's Van Mildert like?

It's a swamp.

Lol I know that. I was thinking more along the lines of its culture and what people think of it who go there .
Important question -

If you're in a hill college, do you still buy a gown i.e. if you're at Van Mildert
and where do you buy the gown, etc?

Jess, have you considered St Chads?

No, but I'll have a look at it on the Open Day-I have quite a few hours to spare in between the subject talks and the official college tours... thank you!

That's brilliant-bit of a shame about the rahs, but Durham still seems great!

Wearing a gown depends more on whether your college is "traditional" or not, and not the location. If you're at Mildert, no worries, you won't have to wear a gown for matriculation or any formals.

Aidan's, Cuthbert's, Collingwood, Hilde Bede and Van Mildert don't wear gowns.

Hello, I am an IB student thinking of entering Durham via adjustment in August since I got rejected (even though I had a 40/45 prediction and a good UCAS form), hoping to either do History or the Combined Honour in Arts. Is there anyone who had experience dealing with adjustment with regards to these degrees, or adjustment as an IB student? Also I would appreciate any information about the situation regarding adjustment this year. \Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm almost certain you will not be able to get into Durham for history through adjustment, because it is one of the most competitive courses at Durham and most prestigious ones too. Your best bet would be to contact Durham admissions, but I'm almost certain they will tell you that they don't do adjustment for history and fiddly certain they don't do it for combined either.

Sorry, but subjects like History, PPE and other really popular subjects are almost certain not to be on adjustment. The only courses that are really on adjustment on Durham are the ones in Stockton and maybe a select few at Durham city.
anybody here study at queens campus? got an unconditional there but worried it'd be really boring!
I'm sure that this isn't the most 'appropriate' question one can ask in this thread, but since the current students went through the same (similar, perhaps?) dilemma I'm facing now, I thought, why not.
I'm holding offers from Bristol(unconditional), Durham(St. Aidan's), Birmingham and Warwick for Law. If any current Law student can tell me why they chose Durham, I'd be really happy
As I'm an international applicant, I've never visited them.

I can give you my perspective for deciding between Bristol and Durham as I was in that position last year.

I chose Durham due to the college system, which has proved to be so good and in allowing me to integrate and meet with more people then I would normally do if I were just in Uni halls. I also preferred the sports facilities at Durham and the very 'studenty feel' to the city.

Specifically, in regards to law, differences include; at Bristol you sit some exams in January where as at Durham you do them all at the end. I liked the structure of the degree at Durham, and again the facilities. You being at Aidan's means that it's about a 15 minute walk to lectures.

Overall, I have a friend who studies law at Bristol who has thoroughly enjoyed his time there. At Durham there are a lot of international societies and groups to help get you involved. Colleges often invite internationals a week earlier then home students to help them get settled before all the home students come, which I think is a good idea.
