Not every college wears gowns. You seem to know very little about Durham for someone who spends so much time on a "Ask a Durham Student" thread
Kingofthering goes round the boards of lots of Russel group unis, airing opinions/ fairly random statements that he thinks will get a reaction (I've already had the gowns chat with him on here) :P I wouldn't really give it the time of day to be honest, for one thing it's unfortunate that it clogs up this board when genuine freshers/prospective students have actual questions!

That is a little harsh, perhaps you should have PM'd me if you had specific concerns. I did make fun of the gowns, but it was just a joke, and not meant to annoy anyone.

Pianoflute, I've already expressed my gratitude many times. Indeed you've claimed my love!!
You've done it again!
Why does anyone feel the need to troll like this guy? We get he's a bigshot public schoolboy with a hugely inflated ego. Who thinks Durham University is far below his 'self-considered' standard. So clearly he has no positive impression of Durham. Why even bother on a Durham thread?? Its maddening. Let the troll piss off to where he considers his talents are respected then.
Leave those of us who are honoured to attend (or about to) a wonderful place, well and truly alone.

Thank God he isn't going to Durham is my opinion.
A rather unnecessarily gloomy and attacking post, things can only get better. TSR is one big family of students.

Do us a favour. Go and post on the public school thread, or better yet, the 'I'm much too good to attend Durham' thread, and stop allowing us mere mortals feeling happy to attend Durham where we are delighted to attend, without listening to your nonsense telling us why we are going to a third class institution.

As hinted earlier, TSR is a holistic and unified entity, which should be embraced by traditional methods for all taking part.
Bristol laws starting salary is 19k, Durham law is 24k...
That means nothing.
A) the people who land TCs at law firms (of which both Bristol and Durham represent a sizeable proportion of) don't need to state a 'starting salary' as they're off for further study with a duration of at least 7-12 months.
B) Of those who don't choose to go down the law route (i.e. decide against the LPC or BPTC) it depends on the sample size - there might be fewer students at either uni who chose to do undergo this route instead. Skewing the data.
A more interesting stat would be the average salary of law grads at each institution 12-18 months down the line.
Hi, can anyone tell me what the accommodation options are after first year? Does it depend on the college? I'd prefer to be able to live in uni accommodation all three years.
Hey guys, I am going to apply to Durham for Politics and the college i really want it John Snow, it's perfect for me! However, when i try to input it on UCAS, John snow or Stephenson aren't options. What do i do?

Depends on the college what the application process is like (I know my college was oversubscribed for 'returners' this year, and had to let people in on a points based system), how much is available and who is eligible I'm afraid! All of the colleges offer accommodation to non freshers, however many prioritize final year students. Some colleges have more space than others but from what I've gathered colleges tend to have systems in place such that those who have specific reasons for wanting to live in can (mostly because of welfare considerations).
However, the vast vast majority of students at Durham live out during at least some of their time at Durham. Why do you especially want to live in? Living out in itself is actually a really good experience and most people don't ever live back in. It's not like Oxbridge at all where certain colleges offer accommodation for all years - here it is more or less expected you will 'live out'. You would need to contact individual colleges for more information about how feasible it would be though!

Durham has two campuses, one in Durham city, the other known as Queen's Campus which is based near Stockton (about 45 mins away). You simply aren't allowed to apply to a college located at the other campus compared to where your course is based, and John Snow and Stephenson are Stockton colleges, whereas Politics is based in Durham city. I'm afraid there's literally nothing else you can do apart from choose a different college in Durham city I'm afraid!
I know it is completely variable, but roughly how long do Durham take to respond to applications?
As you say, completely variable. Even depends year on year and between departments depending on the volume of applications etc - I know people who got offers within a month, I know others who got them in March after a 6-7 month wait!
