Close by.... I don't want to get in the pub when Liverpool are already 4 up.

Well Liverpool would never be 4 up, so go into the pub whenever..

So it's a wet, dark Saturday at the end of November, but there is a big football match on Sky. I want to get out of College to eat and watch the match in a pub.

I head down N Bailey on to Sadler Street, and fancy a decent Indian/Italian meal. Where should I go?

And when I've finished eating, where should I go to see the football?

On Sadler Street for food, you've got Shaheen's Indian. I have no idea how good it is, since I can't eat Indian food for the most part, but it seems to have reasonable business. For Italian, you have Zizzi's, or, if you want something a little more local, La Spaghettata (Spags) - big portions, cheap prices, all fairly tasty!

For the football, The Library often tends to show major sports events (yes, it's a bar - I'd also really recommend there food there too!). I reckon the Half Moon Inn by Elvet Bridge also shows most games, though I think that one is very much a local's pub. The Market Tavern is close by, though not sure about their football provision. And failing all that, there's always Lloyds.

Thank you!
No doubt I will be trying out many different combinations, as I gleefully watch Liverpool sweep all opposition aside.....

Hi  does anyone do Maths at Durham here? If so, wondering what the course is like, positives and negatives etc  thanks!

Does it snow in Durham every year?

It does, but for the past two years it has been minimal. The worst was in 2012 when it took me 4 hours to get home (I live in Northumberland). It can get really cold so be prepared to wrap up warm. January tends to be the worst month for snow.

Hey guys, I am going to apply to Durham for Politics and the college i really want it John Snow, it's perfect for me! However, when i try to input it on UCAS, John snow or Stephenson aren't options. What do i do?

Unfortunately those colleges are based at Queens in Stockton, which means you wouldn't be given them as an option because you will be based in Durham city.

Just to add to my earlier post, I went to The City (right next to the Half Moon Inn) this evening for the first time and found they were showing a game there, so that adds another option to your list!

Are Giffgaff and Lebara recommended for Durham area(mobile and internet for smartphones networks)?Any hint is highly welcome. Thanks

I'm on giffgaff, never had any problems. There are occasional deadspots in Durham but that's across all networks - if anything I think I've had better signal than most of my friends on other networks. With giffgaffs new 4G offer too I've got 4g coverage too, but otherwise can always get good 3g or connect to uni wifi
Pianoflute, since you're on, would you say that the content difficulty/time spent studying varies significantly from year-to-year in Physics?

I was wondering if there are a fair amount of people who abstain from the use of alcohol at Durham. Also during fresher's week do they have activities for individuals who do not drink alcohol?

I know people who drink regularly, people who drink infrequently (myself included) and people who don't drink at all, for a whole host of reasons. I can't speak for every college, but at Butler, there's plenty of activities in Freshers Week for people who don't want to drink, and it's really up to you as to how much you want to drink whenever. There are plenty of activities you can join in as well that are drinking-orientated to some degree which you can always just stick to soft drinks at. It just depends on what you feel like doing
How much alcohol do people bring for freshers or do many people buy it there?

People tend to bring a bit with them and then buy more in Durham at either Tescos or Dunelm.

You'll have opportunities to get it in Durham, but if you have a bit of space in the car or whatever I'd perhaps bring a bit e.g bottle of vodka/rum etc

Yeah that's what I was planning to do, thanks. Surely Tesco is really packed during freshers week, they must have a lot of alcohol stocked up...

No worries and yeah it's not the biggest of places during freshers, so queues in there can be fun.. But yeah there's almost always all alcohol available, apart from end of exams last year when they ran out of the cheapest champagne and the track value vodka.

Hmmm. I'd say looking back, I definitely spent less time working in first year, but as to whether that was because there was significantly less work, or the fact that we were all very aware the year didn't count (we wanted to do well, but didn't need to try super hard!) I don't know! Over the other years I think it depends on what combination of modules you do and exactly how your timetable is set up. You have a similar number of contact hours (ie. lectures, tutorials, labs) each year. I think it's different for different people - some people work much harder in later years to pull their grades up, others have gotten more efficient at working etc. I think for me it's been much the same each year - I tend to work pretty hard though and have from the start!

Have a great time in Durham!
Is it true that you're more likely to get an offer if you send off your application before the Oxbridge deadline or not?

On another note, how much extra curricular should I be putting in my personal statement (at the moment it's probably at about 20% (not related to my course) EC and 80% academic)?

Not true whatsoever. Durham don't care if you apply to Oxbridge so that won't impact the likeliness of you getting an offer.

Yeah I would say something like 75/25. Durham really like the personal statement so you wanna show an interest for your subject while also showing you're a well rounded individual.

No and that sounds about right.
Ok bought some vodka and some last minute essentials today...I had a cold this week but I'm almost back to 100%...bring on freshers!

Oh and do many people come by train? I've only spoken to people who are arriving by car...
