I can only share my experience but last year I had AAAA on results day so missed my A*AA offer for chem, got a remark, eng lit went up to A* so met my offer. However Durham said they only had a place for next year.
A week later they offer me a place for this year but with accommodation in Teikyo University's halls near Mary's.
Then they finally offered me a place with a room in my college (Trevs).

If you've had a remark I think they redo your allocation to a less subscribed college like Van Mildert, Trevs, etc.

Thanks so much, the thing is all of my friends are going to hatfield and it's the college I had my heart set on. Hopefully they'll let me in, not sure if I want to go if I don't go there as stupid as that sounds

What is the phone service like around the science site (specifically for giffgaff)? On the POVD it wasn't great and I was thinking about changing provider and wondered what the best network is for that.

It's subpar at times (I'm on giffgaff as well), but if you need to make a call then you can, you just have to find areas with reception e.g. around Calman Learning Centre, around Bill Bryson Library some times.
Hi  I'll be studying physics but I'd like to do a language (French, specifically) as the optional module in first year. I was wondering just generally what it's like to do a language as an extra module, what sort of stuff you do, what you get out of it, etc. Thanks!

To be honest I think it's probably better to be in a college where you don't know anyone anyway as it forces you to make new friends/meet new people anyway. It's probably quite likely you'll get reallocated but you might be able to still go to Hatfield

Making friends isn't really a problem I'm going to throw myself into everything but maybe it's a plus. It's just my ideal college, like it's got the best rugby team etc all the little stuff
hi! I'm an incoming exchange student from unimelb and I've got a number of questions:

1) I've been placed in St. Chad's College, what's it like?
2) Being a mixed asian, is Durham University diverse?
3) Is it easy/cheap to travel to different cities, especially London and Edinburgh?
4) Does the university schedule any student trips around the U.K. or other parts of Europe?
I want to apply to Durham but I'm scared I won't enjoy it because I don't drink or go clubbing. What's the drinking culture like and can you still have fun without taking a massive part

Great, thank you! Do you have to use your 3G often or can you use the eduroam or whatever it's called? If so, what's the 3G like?
What is the signal like in Durham on 3? Specifically, what is the signal like around St Chads (the college I am assigned to) and the science site? I'm currently in the process of getting a new phone and I was wondering which network has the best service but if anyone has any information about 3 network that would be great.

Nope, on the science site, or near any college there's the university wifi that you can use - which is what most people do.

We get 4G in Durham! Again, it's just temperamental about where you can receive it. But generally around Durham there's decent coverage.
Anyone know the likelihood of getting into your first choice college following a remark?

Oo, my friend is in exchange at Melbourne! You could be their exchange partner!

1) I don't go to Chad's, but it's a small college, and with it (like John's) there's probably a strong community spirit. You basically get to know everyone - from people in your year to people in the year above.
2) I wouldn't say Durham is as diverse as Manchester or London, but it never becomes a problem.
3) It's easy to get to places, especially to London and Edinburgh since Durham lies on the Edinburgh to London train line. It's not exactly cheap though - a Durham to London return ticket is about 100AUD without a railcard and with one it's about 70AUD, going to Edinburgh is a bit cheaper, it's about 30AUD for a return.
4) The university itself doesn't organise trips but there are societies which do. You can signup to them at the freshers fair.

Drinking culture is a thing at Durham, as it is at any other UK university. Not drinking is fine, plenty of people don't, you can still have fun in your college or at societies.
Are there any current (English Lit) students who could tell me when they accessed their preliminary reading lists? I'm a fresher who's starting to panic about not being able to read it all before October 8th! :s-smilie:

Yes, Durham is one of our exchange partners! Btw, what are your favourite societies/associations?

I haven't really done that much in the past couple of years, I'm planning to do more in my final two years. But, I've taken part with different theatre tech teams which was fun, and I've also gone to various things like DU Coffee Soc.

There's a lot to do and it's just finding the time to commit yourself and take part
Hey guys!! Excited for the term to start!! I was wondering about the accommodation - I'd sometimes like friends to stay overnight if they visit, is that allowed? Like would it be a problem if they camped on the floor of my room or something?
