Is anyone studying liberal arts or know someone who is? Have a place for history but considering switching to liberal arts and am wanting opinion from a current student. Things that are putting me off include not being immersed in one subject and it being harder because you're writing different kinds of essays and using different skills and basically just doing more work, not being part of a particular subject society etc etc thanks for any feedback

Might be a silly question, but can you handwrite your essays or do they have to be typed on computer?
Is there diversity in terms of ethnics at Durham? Is there inclusivity?
Are the majority of Durham students rich white kids who came from private schooling?

I'm not sure what the situation is with taking a German Module in Nat Sci courses since I'm a lawyer, but I do know that the languages department offers weekly evening classes for a wide range of languages from beginner to advanced. So if you're really keen, there's definitely a way to do it. I've been doing french once a week throughout first year.

Are those evening classes free?

you pick your language module in replacement of another natsci optional module. theres different stages of languages but the one i did was 20 credits and meant having 2 lectures a week during the day.

only annoying thing is going from science site to elvet and then back to science site so youll prob be like 5 mins late to lectures twice a week

What is the schedule like for a first year Natural Sciences (looking at Math Physics here) student? I'd really like to learn German alongside, and I'd like to know if that's possible!

I believe that if you do a German module as part of your 120 credits, the marks will count towards your first year results.
i got my IB grades back a few days ago but i still dont have a confirmation from Durham.
my conditions were 38 points, 666 HL, and a 7 in SL math
i got 39 points, 776 HL, but a 6 in math
i called durham up about this and they said they cant give me a confirmation until a level results come out
does anyone know what my chances are of getting accepted?

(side question: i asked previously if we could eat [small snacks] during lectures but nobody really answered me so if someone could answer me that would be very appreciated x)

you can bring your whole dinner in if you want haha. you dont get told off. It is more about the other students staring you down for making noise.

That is very strange because I know a few IB students who have got their grades on the day and got accepted. Since you have met the entry requirements, and your conditional offer is 38 (you got 39), you must get accepted, otherwise, there might just be a delay. I wouldn't worry about it! Strange how they mentioned that you must wait for a levels, I haven't known any IB student to have gone through that. But maybe it has changed now, who knows! I may be wrong. But your grades are above the entry requirements of you conditional offer. You are in!! Well done

no, sometimes depends on the college. Bailey colleges seem to be more poluated with privately taught students simply because the environment may be similar to their school hence why they chose the college. But honestly, there is a good mix of state, scholarships and rich kids haha
(thanks for answering my question haha!)

does anyone know about durham's policy for emotional support animals? am i allowed to bring a small bunny (like netherland dwarf size) to accommodation? what are the chances it can be negotiated for my mental health needs?

i checked with admissions, and they said that i still need to wait for a levels to come out (i'm a "near miss" candidate because i didn't meet my math requirements) would you know the likeliness of me getting in by any chance? D:

Evening classes aren’t free I’m afraid, my French one was about £200 for the year, but I didn’t want to take it as a credit bearing module as I prefer to take Law modules, they’re my passion afterall. So I do it as a side thing. If you choose to take it as prt of your degree though, it’s free and it’ll be normal lecture hours.

From what I know of colleges, there is not a chance in hell you’ll be allowed a pet. Most landlords will also include a clause in the lease prohibiting pets, but I’ve heard of some livers-out keeping hamsters or whatever in their rented houses. Whether they did that with permission or just ignored the rules however is another matter.

College and the students union often have puppies and stuff in though for those purposes. Ours is called Jolene I think.
