What college were you reallocated to? I was reallocated to a newer self catered college (Stephenson) and I originally applied to Mary’s which is catered and much more traditional but I’m definitely already growing to like my reallocated college after researching it. It definitely not what I originally wanted but everyone always falls in love with their college in the end and the friends and people you meet way the make up the majority of your university experience anyway not the type of accommodation

Same thing happened to me!

Anybody have any info on what Grey is like? For example, ensuite rooms and single rooms?

Hi! I'm a current student, but not at Grey. I do know that there's a mix of room types though. I had friends at grey who shared a room when they lived in college, and I also know some people who had single ensuite rooms.
Here's a thread with a similar question, and they've had someone answer it better than I can!
https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4585746

What I will say is everyone I know at Grey has been lovely, and I personally like the college. It's big but not too big, if that makes sense, and there's a nice community feel about it. They also have a really good "Grey Day" in summer which is only for students from Grey. Its basically like a little festival in the college and it's always been a highlight for lots of people from Grey!

So I'm thinking of applying to Durham for my masters but I was wondering if postgrads normally live in uni accommodation or not? I'm from Durham so I'd be comfortable and probably prefer to find my own accommodation, but if it turns out everyone lives in uni accommodation I'd do that so I'm not missing out.
Is there anyone here who applied or has been admitted to a Ph.D. program at the University of Durham? I would like to ask a few questions if that's possible.
There is a college for postgradue students, but it is quite far away from the city centre and train station. You can still get involved at school with everyone thought if you wanna live out

There are hotels and premier inns

Is there anywhere else I can stay overnight if Stephenson doesn't over an overnight option? Because the drive is too far to make for one day, and I'm not sure what I'd really get out if it.
Hello! Question, for Hatfield College, what is the rule about guests? If I were to have my boyfriend over for the night, how long would he be able to stay ext ext

Ok, the number of new threads in this sub-forum has increased dramatically of late and a lot of these could have been avoided with a little research (i.e use of the "search" function). That's not to say that the issues raised in each thread aren't important, but it's just not feasible for new threads to be started everytime somebody has a question.

Having discussed this with the moderators, the new plan is for this here thread, the "Ask a Current Student" thread to be created and stickied in the Durham sub-forum. If you have a question which you feel can be answered quickly and succinctly with just a couple of posts and you can't find the answer you are looking for using the "search" function, simply post your question in here, and with any luck a current Durham student will happily oblige and try to answer.

Also, here's a link to Becca's hugely useful and informative Durham FAQ Thread: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=130882

I hope this helps unclog the Durham sub-forum and look forward to seeing the thread in use .

When can students with offers apply for accomodation?

When can students with offers apply for accomodation?

If you've been given an offer, then you will have been allocated a college.
Durham's a bit strange in that you don't really apply for accommodation, when you applied to Durham in the first place you would have selected a college as your preference (or submitted an open application with no preference), the university then decides to place you in a college, taking into account but not necessarily giving you the college you selected as a preference.
If youve not heard directly (through an email/UCAS) about your allocated college, then I believe you can see where you've been allocated through the online booking form for the post offer day, so give that a go.

If you're talking more specifically about room-type applications (i.e. if your allocated college has a range of different accommodation options), then this depends on your college, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about any of it until after results day. In my case (St. Aidan's college, started in 2016) I got an email maybe a week or so after A-Level results day with a link to an online form where I could state my preference of room type and other admin stuff.

Let me know if I've misunderstood your question or if there's anything else you'd like to know about Durham!

How many societies does Durham have and do you have to pay to be in a society (how much)? Are the societies within each specific college or for all general students?
Additionally, what's the ACS society like?

Does anyone know anything about John Snow? They've moved the college to the durham campus and are rebuilding it but I've been allocated it and can't find anything really online?

I have been allocated there too. On their website, it says that students for the academic year 2019/20 will be staying at Rushford Court.

How do they move the college? Surely they don't move the actual building but then it's not really the same is it? Or have they replicated it? Why not just make it a different college?

so the colleges at Durham are much more than the buildings that they're in, which is what makes the collegiate system here so amazing.
John Snow and Stephenson colleges were actually at Queen's campus in Stockton until the 2017/18 academic year, when everything from Queen's campus was moved to Durham city.
Where John Snow college is currently was only ever meant to be temporary, and yes it will be in Rushford Court next academic year (which was renovated last year, it used to be a hospital but was empty for years I think). Pretty sure this year John Snow have actually been sharing a physical location with Ustinov college, but please someone correct me if I'm wrong as I'm not sure.
Also, a new college is being created which should become part of Durham in the 2020/2021 academic year I believe. Hasn't been named or anything yet though.
Does anyone know if bars and clubs check your ID or do they not really care?
Yeah they all check your ID quite thoroughly
