Hi, I'm an offer holder for Japanese Studies at Durham and had a few questions.

What's the closest college to the modern languages school? It doesn't seem to show up on any of the maps so I'm not entirely sure where it actually is.

I believe Japanese Studies is also a relatively new course they're offering here, is that right? I've seen a few people mention this, but haven't been able to confirm. My concerns being on how well established it is if it was new.

My last question would be about Teikyo, the Japanese uni close by. From what I've seen there does seem to be some collaboration with Durham Uni, but i haven't been able to find out to what extent. What opportunities are available from there?

Hey, I'm at the modern languages school, which consists of two buildings (Elvet Riverside). The closest colleges would be the bailey ones - Hatfield, St Chad's, St John's, St Cuthbert's and Castle. I'm at St Mary's and it takes me around 10/15 minutes to walk there.

I'm not sure how long the Japanese Studies course has been around for, so cannot answer for that.

Regarding Teikyo, every year in April and September, a group of around 30 Japanese students from Teikyo University arrive in Durham to improve their English skills, taking classes and interacting with Durham students. I believe there is some sort of cultural/language exchange partnership available for students.

If my course lets me take language modules, will the course title feature the language? I have an offer for BA Accounting and Finance and I would like to take either French, Chinese or Arabic modules.

No I don't think the name of the degree will change. I'm doing econ with an open module in sociology but my degree is still BA economics. So I think the same rule will apply for a language module

Hello, I have a few questions.
How likely am I to get my first choice college? If I get my first choice college (St Cuthberts) do I get to choose which site I'm on?

How likely is a bit of a how long is a piece of string question...it depends massively on your course and the college you've put (and even then varies a lot year on year)
In terms of Cuths, you can express a preference, but not everyone gets their preference  I think in general being on the Bailey is more popular so you'd be more likely to get the self catered bit but the trend is moving towards self catered colleges so that may be changing!
I've been trying to find more information on accomodation costs but haven't really been able to find anything. Can anyone point me to where I'd find the costs of staying in one of the colleges, does the location matter? What's the most you'd pay for an en-suite and catering vs a shared room and self-catering. I'm really just looking for solid prices, as I'm not really familar with how this all works.

Hi, most colleges have the same price, so location does not matter. https://www.durham.ac.uk/colleges-and-student-experience/accommodation-and-catering/residence-charges/undergraduate-residence-charges/ . The only 2 college that has a different cost are Chad's and John's, the cost can be found on their website but it's more or less the same as any other college
My daughter has an offer for Cuths and we are trying to decide the best option for catering. Can I ask a couple of questions?

If she was to go self catering on Parson's field, could she buy an occasional meal ticket to eat at the Bailey site? If so, how much is it per meal? I assume formals are more than a standard dinner? I know there is a 10 meals per week option but that may be too many for her.

If she was to choose full catered on the Bailey site, are formals included? or is there a supplement?

Are sample menus available anywhere?

Thanks

Hi there

I believe Cuths has a pay-as-you-go option apart from the meals package. With pay as you go, you can purchase a meal as and when you want, without subscribing to the 10 meals per week thing. I believe each meal doesn't cost more than £4-5 but you can contact the Food Services Manager, Haley Carr ([email protected]) and ask her about it. As for formals, this is what Cuths' student handbook states:

For catered students (i.e., students living on the Bailey, or in Parson's Field with the meals package)
a Formal ticket costs £8.70.
For self-catered students (i.e., students living out, or in Parson's Field without the meals package) a
ticket costs £11.55

There could potentially be a change in costs as these figures are for 21-22. As for the menu, I could find one for Trevelyan college but it's more or less similar across colleges: https://trevsjcr.com/menus/.

Hope that helps

My son has been invited to pre-season training for his sport starting 30th August up until the start of term. Obviously that’s not very long after results day, so what happens about college accommodation allocation and moving in? He has provisionally been allocated to Van Mildert but I understand this could also change between now and then?

Hi there

I'm not sure how this works but if he has been invited then the uni should be providing him accommodation. The uni will obviously try to confirm colleges ASAP after results day and there's a very high chance that most students will stay in their allocated colleges. If you know somebody who is going to lead this training session, then it's best to contact them. If not, try emailing Team Durham and the provisional college to find out what exactly will be the case: [email protected] ; [email protected]

Hi! I'm coming to Durham this August for my Masters. All the student accommodation websites/companies say that all their apartments for 22/23 session are fully booked! Is this usually how it is at Durham? What would be my best way of getting an apartment/studio?

Pretty normal, Durham housing season is incredibly early (October - January). You have a few options: you can ask to be allocated college accomodation, that won't be allocated just yet, you can find someone who has signed a place and now doesn't need it (there's always many of these on pages like Durham uni find a housemate) or sometimes some stuff might become available later if say someone doesn't meet their grades (but that's a much less likely option, I'd definitely try the first 2 options over this)
I would actually prefer to live in a private accommodation instead of the university colleges. An agent told me that I can live in New Castle or Sunderland and be schooling at Durham. She said it's not far and there are trains available. Is this true? Do people actually do this?

Sunderland to Durham is a nightmare on the train, it would be doable if you had a car but I wouldn't fancy doing it regularly on the train. Newcastle can be more doable although it is very limiting relying on trains as you always have to be back by a certain time, trains are sometimes cancelled/run extremely late, and also travelling Newcastle - Durham nearly every day on the train would get expensive quickly. It would be doable but I'm not sure I would recommend it, especially if you want to get involved in the social side of Durham. Also doubt many people do it as Newcastle is probably more expensive accommodation than Durham so add in the train fare and you're paying very high rates!
