Ok, the number of new threads in this sub-forum has increased dramatically of late and a lot of these could have been avoided with a little research (i.e use of the "search" function). That's not to say that the issues raised in each thread aren't important, but it's just not feasible for new threads to be started everytime somebody has a question.
Having discussed this with the moderators, the new plan is for this here thread, the "Ask a Current Student" thread to be created and stickied in the Durham sub-forum. If you have a question which you feel can be answered quickly and succinctly with just a couple of posts and you can't find the answer you are looking for using the "search" function, simply post your question in here, and with any luck a current Durham student will happily oblige and try to answer.
How would you rank the colleges now based on lived experience. Would it be different to how you ranked them when you applied- and if so why
Hey!
Thanks for this question because honestly my view of colleges has completely changed since I've come here.
The main thing that I would ignore in terms of ranking colleges is their distance. It simply doesn't matter. They're all in walkable distance of all the major teaching sites and the worst case situation is you take a bus for less than five minutes. I'd honestly not consider distance at all in my decision if I was to do it again.
The other thing is to not be so scared of Aidans. I know the stairs look scary but you don't have to go up them. It is basically at the same level as John Snow/South/Van Mildert. It is a really nice college with really good facilities and don't let its supposed distance discourage you.
The other thing is that don't let college stereotypes discourage you. All the colleges makes sure that all subjects are fairly represented in every college to make sure the student body in each college is fair. More often than not, you'll find your people in your college and there is no need to worry.
In reflection, I would honestly say the college you get allocated to in the end isn't as be-all end-all as it looks when you're applying. I would say basically everyone in Durham loves their college and it'll become part of your identity, regardless of what position it was in your ranking.
