A couple of random questions that came to mind:

1. Will I need to invest in a printer to connect to my laptop, or will computer rooms be sufficient?

By all means buy one if you want, you can get them quite cheap after all. But, if you didn't, I don't think you'd have too many problems in being able to print using the uni facilities, especially not first thing in the morning (8:30   ).

But it's always best to have a back up option I suppose. I bought one myself to use primarily as a book scanner.

Having your own printer will probably save you money in the long run if you need to print lots, particularly if some of that is colour pages. Print credits in uni are like 5p each but if you want to print colour I think in the library it's a lot more than that isn't it?

Also it's a lot more convenient, as there's no waiting for someone else to finish printing before you can. I wish I'd bought my own printer, and I probably will next year.

To be honest I've never had a problem with print queues or anything, and I often print stuff out half an hour (or less) before deadlines. I've had to buy plenty of print credits but the total cost is still much cheaper than buying and running a printer. I would say don't bother getting one, although plenty of people do.

I have a feeling I'm going to be posting on this thread a whole lot in the coming months.

I'd be very dissapointed if you didn't

Okay, so I guess there aren't any obligatory things with parents on the first few days then. I think mine might stay overnight somewhere in Durham, seeing as it's a 15 hour flight to get to England... can't exactly tell them that the only point of them coming was for the extra luggage space.

Where are you flying from? I will be flying back home for the summer, so I will be coming in from Kuala Lumpur where my Dad works. Or maybe Singapore. Depends on which airport has the right departure date. Really not looking forward to a 13 hour flight.

You're amazing.

Thanks to everyone for the printer replies as well! I have a feeling I'm going to be posting on this thread a whole lot in the coming months.

Awwww shucks, thanks. Pre-freshers bar crawl here we come!

You should make it a pre-freshers tsr bar crawl :yep:

2. My college said that we can move in from the 2nd onwards but have to be there on the 5th... will I be very lonely if I'm there on the 2nd or 3rd?

3. How long do parents usually stay after dropping us off?

1. Do it, they are only £50 for a good monolaser. It saves having to transfer files over, find a working printer and then go print. If you fancy printing anything colour buy yourself your own inkjet too, it costs 32p a sheet for colour printing here.

2.Depends when your college events start, are you an international?

3.Varies.

But of course. Everyone is invited to this. Pre-freshers TSR Bar Crawl it is!

Now does one work their way from Bailey to Hill or the other way around? I'm assuming it would be better from Bailey to Hill. I don't think I can make it up at the end of it all.
Reply 828
that depends on where you want to end up... you are in a hill college right? In which case you probably want to start Bailey, 'cause then you won't have so far to stagger home at the end of the night.

Just thought I would point out a tincy wincy flaw, the bars are unlikely to be open until freshers week...

hmm... older students? Do you know the truth of what HMK says?
I'd have thought some of them at least might be open with International students around.

The colleges often have conferences etc in, and they are not going to want us students in there. Then there are the economics of keeping them open with no conferences in...

Someone once said that the bars are open a couple of days before everyone arrives proper. Not sure who it was though.

Right, all freshers listen up! Bring liquor! Settled.

Yeah they open up for the international students, though I doubt how many TSR people will be in Durham. Coming to think of it I have no idea as to when I am in college, or if.

Yep, HMK didn't read the posts properly again...
This is planned for the few days when the international students are here, but before freshers week...

and if the worst comes to the worst, I suspect I may be able to convince Prudy that you lot will trek up to Nevilles Cross.

Question time!

How important is it to bring your own laptop computer to Durham? My parents will buy me a new one if need be, but if it will just sit in my room it's not really worth sending it all the way over there.

Dad seems to think that people socialise around the communal computers but I'm not so sure this is entirely true and wonder how many communal computers there actually are...

Oh and I'll be at Collingwood if that helps.

It wont just sit in your room trust me. Most of the communal computers are in libraries, and there isnt much socialisation that goes on in them. Plus a laptop is only around £300-£400 that would do most stuff. Asides you can do more on your own computer than a uni one, for starters most peoples work would not fit in 100MB

Cool thank you

Oh and how are rooms connected to the internet? Broadband or by a cable/plug thing (I don't know what that's called...)
