Having said that however I applied before the Oxbridge deadline, having applied to Cambridge and I didnt get my Durham offer until 5 hours after Cambridge had officially rejected me on the UCAS track system, so my advice would be, if you are not applying to Oxbridge to wait until shortly after the Oxbridge deadline has passed, it was c15th October last year. It is a cynical view to take and I know the unis arent supposed to know where you have applied but I thought it rather coincidental that my Durham offer came through so shortly after my Cambridge news.

This is a fiction. As HMK says it is coincidence. 1) Durham wouldn't have known whether or not you were rejected, 2) Many Oxbridge candidates get their 'result' months after the Oxbridge result: I got mine 1 week after 1st time round and 3 months after secdodn time round.

Just wondering if theres any point trying the more heavily subscribed colleges or just to settle on one you like and ignore ratios etc? Also, after being selected by the department for your academic prowess etc whats the selection criteria for the colleges? Thanks xx

Just to add to HMK, it is partly first come first served. Basically the colleges will take a certain amount of students per subject and the rest get pooled. Depending on your subject you are more or less likely to get a college, for example alot of lawyers/historians etc will apply early due to them most likely also applying for Oxbridge so you may still be pooled even if you apply on the 15th Oct. due to the colleges being oversubscribedx for that subject.

sports questions!

whats the difference between the 'premier' and '1st' divisions in the inter-college sports competitions?

Also, how popular is Doxbridge and how many colleges usually go?

thanks

Which is the best sporting college? And who has the upper hand, Hill or Bailey colleges?

Is there free and plenty of access to printers at the uni or will I need to bring my own?

You have to pay around 4-5p a sheet to print stuff off, and the printers in colleges are not always too well maintained. My advice would be to get a cheap laser.

You expect TSR members to be able to answer that question? :p:

I feel more proud of being part of a college that is good at sport rather than being an ancient building.

I think Collingwood is meant to be pretty good...it depends on the sport though, some are very good at certain sports and some are less so, what sport were you thinking of particularly?

I haven't got a clue about any of the questions you asked.
Just thought I'd reply to let you know this so that you didn't feel ignored.

Yeah, I read them too, but I am not really a sporting sort (ie I am a lazy ****) so I can't really help either.

There are plenty of athletic types around Durham but they are probably out jogging or climbing mountains or wrestling bears or whatever it is they do instead of sitting in front of a computer all day like me. :o:

Aw...that's nice :p:

Sport is supposed to be a big thing at Durham, with an 80% participation rate (or something like that). We must be the remaining 20% (sitting in front of computers). I've never really been sporty (apart from swimming) but I am developing an interest in sailing though and would joing a hillwalking or rambling club if there was one (I'm not brave enough for mountaineering).

So I don't know how much help I can be but I'll give it a go.

First of all I don't know whether Doxbridge is that big a deal. I used it as an example of rivalry with Oxbridge (but only in sport, not academics). But college rivalry and BUSA has always been more important.

From what I know all (or most) colleges go. I could be wrong though. I know that Hild Bede, Hatfield, John Snow and Van Mildert are relatively strong. Cuth's and Stephenson have also performed relatively well recently. Whether all of these go each year, I don't know.

Durham does have a hillwalking club -- I know a few people who are in it.

Also, in continuation to River85, every college enjoys their sport, Wednesday afternoon everyone practices, some have their own facilities, others use Maiden Castle (the sports complex).
I'd suggest googling Team Durham for more specialised info!

Will I be able to sort out my Zetoc access and library stuff during Freshers Fair? I like to be well prepared. Much appreciated!
