Pimms o'clock
Am I being really thick when I ask if Durham interview their English applicants?? xx

They used to I think but not anymore, no. So it's not a silly question at all.

There's actually one exception to this, mature students. They will usually interview a mature student: -

"Mature students in whom we are interested will be called for interview; otherwise, the department does not interview potential students."

So, with no interview (and it being an excellent and oversubscribed department) it invites the question what do they look at in place of an interview? The English department's website is really useful: -

"We pay particular attention to GCSE results, AS results when listed, predicted and actual A level results, the school reference and the personal statement."

http://www.dur.ac.uk/english.studies/undergrad/apply/

In other words, everything  As I'm feeling mischavious I think I'll draw "particular attention" to GCSE results.

These keyboards in ER2 are getting worse. Almost unusable

Erm, not really an societies that I'm aware of.

There is Palatinate, the university newspaper

Durham21 (the online newspaper and four or five times NUS website of the year  )

http://durham21.co.uk/people.asp

Plus another I think (except I'm having a big mind blank).

Mostly Harmless

At somewhere like Hild Bede, can anyone participate in sports or is it only really those who excel that are in the teams and such?

And what's the general consensus of Cuths and also Chads?

Gracias

Sports teams, at college and university level, cater for all ability levels.

Cuth's is a very friendly college and a little more diverse than the other Bailey colleges (with more local and mature students). We also have the bestbar (despite what JB claim  )

Chad's has a good library! :p:

Are you at Cuth's? Mr River's presence is certainly a reason in enough to apply there :^_^:

Heh. I was speaking to someone who went to Chad's, and she said HB is very sporty. I really really like the look of the college - are you sure that those who are terrible at sports can join in?

I prefer immature students:p:

I'll be taking up pool at university level I hope. If we play Gaelic football I'd play that, or lacrosse, otherwise I'm not really interested.

Are there any societies or similiar at durham where you can get involved in things like kayaking or sailing or anything? I used to do it quite alot as i live in the lake district but havent had the chance recently.

What about the Cuth's hockey club? Do they play that at the "people who really suck level" because I haven't played since something like year 9 but I remember liking it then.

Are there lots of women sports teams? Like football?

Sorry if this question seems stupid

I'm not great at sports at all but there are sports teams I can join for fun... right??

What do I need for formals as well? I'm going to St Cuthberts so will I need to buy a dinner jacket/tux or regular suit or both?

Reply 1013

Formals only require a regular suit, balls etc may need a dinner jacket type arrangement.
There are loads of womens sports teams, each college probably has at least 1 womens football team.

Yes there is a sailing club. It's now based at the Derwent Reservior (somewhere I haven't been in years depsite going quite often when younger. Think I'll go tommorrow...)

College accommodation is paid termly. For UK students, fees are also paid termly, but as your location is set to Hong Kong I don't know whether that's also the case for international students, and there are probably different arrangements according to whether you have a tuition fee loan or pay cash.

Sorry for the random Q, but is Hild Bede considered a formal college? As in do they have formal balls and that kind of thing? I get the impression that it's only Castle that has regular formal evening things, but I may be horrendously misinformed :o:

Hild Bede has formals like all colleges, but as I understand it there is no compulsion to go them. They do pretty nice food at them though.
