Can you join later in the year? Say, if they announced that there'd be a speaker that I really wanted to see.

Yeah, you just go down the DUS office. Though I would encourage you to join in the beginning so you dont miss out on other stuff, e.g. Freshers drinks.

no it's another way of saying that all the speakers will be members only :p:
it appears that some of the forums will be open to more people, and I think some of the social events might be open (having just checked, yes, some of the social events are open, but they'll cost non-members more to go to)

oops, I need to read it properly, I read it as certain speakers not certainly the speakers :p:

Ah, yes that makes more sense. I was slightly confused as to how you'd managed to get that inference out of what I'd said.

And yes, you will be able to join at any point, but you may as well join at the beginning, and go to events like the free welcome drinks - sparkling wine and pizza, s'good - on the 12th (which I'm not going to 'cause I'm going to go see Rich Hall instead )

I dont think we are allowed long to it anyway, I thought it was new members only...

Have you/most people you know at Durham joined?

The majority don't join, but myself and Aula are both members.

Speakers in Michaelmas 2008: Will Greenwood, Shami Chakrabarti, General Sir Richard Dannatt, Iain Duncan Smith, Peter Stringfellow and Jeremy Irons

I'm sold.

JEREMY IRONS?! Holy guacamole!

Actually, quite a lot of people I know at Durham joined, but also, a lot of them don't do anything with it. (Then again, I also know quite a lot of people who are very involved in the DUS, but I guess that comes from being involved in student politics too).
I remember last year there was a lot of confusion on here about the difference between the Union Society and the Student union. Never quite understood how people got so confused by that myself, but apparently they did...

Cheers!

I wonder how many societies it's feasible to join and take part in...
Will I need to buy any textbooks and are there any secondhand places in durham that sell them?

http://www.dus.org.uk/Upcoming_Debates_and_Forums According to that there's a few other things open to all, but I assume after the first term everything's members only?

Not everything, but most things, yes. There'll be various internal debating competitions which will be open to everyone (Robson Cup, Fresher Cup, Inter-college Cup).

Which was... umm... interesting *cough*Wezselftan*cough*

Unless you are going to go clubbing etc each week, dont bother.

What Societies have caught your eye, anyhow?

Wez, you might want to go and defend the DUS here. As our college secretary, of course...

On the other hand, the entertainment at the ball actually looks fairly good this year...
