I thought it was illegal to charge for the water itself, but they could charge for the service and hire of the glass?

They have to have a free tap water alternative I think. Well anyway, whoever behind the bar isn't going to know if its now not the case.

I thought under 18s were allowed in before 9 anyway.

A while back they refused my ID (apparently I looked too young :o: ), then the manager showed up and ordered the guy to serve me whilst clipping him around the ear. Looks like I wont be needing my ID in there again

Meh... I got ejected from a Wetherspoon's when I was 17, when trying to buy a coke with a meal, despite complying with all their "family eating" rules, ie. sitting in the family area, being with over 18s, eating before 9.00pm (It was three in the afternoon!) etc. I sent them a letter about it, but just recieved one back saying that they have to be very careful with under 18s incase they are given alcohol by others... I was not impressed...

The first year modules are disgustingly easy. For example the "IT Skills" module and "Statistics" module both do not reach A-level standard.

Plus the uni experience is much better in Durham itself, and hence how an employer would see you.

Both courses have basically the same content in the first two years, though. Besides, If I get AAB- I'll do the straight Psych course at Leeds (if they accept me) the idea for applying to this one was that the entry requirement is lower, and they have pretty good research facilities down at Stockton.

You are joking right? The content and assessment is markedly different.

Plus Durham have been known to let people in to the normal Psych course on ABB

Have to choose by tonight to sell me your college people! I was looking at St Mary's (they cater for my dietary requirements), but how likely is it you'll have to share a room?
I want a single en-suite, and I know it seems like Josephine Butler but I'm not entirely sure what I want to do catered/non-catered wise.
Also, not that its a big problem to me, but would being a cultural minority be odd in Durham? I don't want to not fit in....
But suggest me colleges people

With regard to St. Mary's, it is possible, some may say even probable, that you will have to share a room, but it will most likely only be for one term. Everyone swaps rooms every term to ensure that everyone gets a chance to have a single. I'm going to start at St. Mary's next Saturday, and as of yet, I don't know if I'm going to be sharing or not in my first term!

Still... do choose Mary's... it's so pretty, and brilliant in many other ways!

I went into Spoons once when I was 17 and tried to buy a lemonade, and the woman working there tried to ID me and then wouldn't serve me when I didn't have anything.

I've never agreed having strict liability for purchases of alcohol. I get asked for ID and I'm 24...

Correct.

Sorry, i think i've asked this before, maybe i'm just criminally dense, but how do you register for modules??

Just got a message via Facebook saying if you enroll by wednesday they'll have campus cards ready, but you surely can't enroll till you've registered for your extra modules, which I thought you couldn't do till you get there?

I'm so confused!

Okay, this might not be right, but I think enrolment and registration are two different things -- enrolment is when you fill in all your billing information and confirm your address and all that.

I know I had to do some sort of "online enrolment" thing at the end of last year before I could register and I was really confused at first.

If I'm totally wrong though and somebody else knows then feel free to correct me!

You'll get a list of times when each department is open for other students to register, as well as a time you have to register and get your form signed off by your own department. Then you get to go to SPA and get your little green card stamped, and THEN you can queue to get a campus card! You're enrolled (I think :s:) once you have this green card stamped (ie you've done both the online registration and module registration).

It's really not as exciting as it sounds; be prepared for a lot of queuing!

They seem to be starting a different system this year though; people have been sending in photos for the campus cards ahead of time instead of queuing to get them taken.

Registration is pretty dull, yeah.

Durham, trying to be efficient?!?!?!?! What is the world coming to?!?!?!?!
I tried getting my photo done already to save queuing but because it doesn't have a white background they moaned. It's not a bloody passport FFS. If they said it had to be a white background beforehand I would not have complained. You know, it's nice being told the full facts. It's bad enough when I find software claiming it's compatible with Windows XP meaning 32bit without stating it won't work on x64.

The module registration is not going to be online until 2010, until then its paper. Apparently it takes 3 years to develop a database.

The university's computing systems operate under a special system in which the contents of each individual bit are written out on a scrap of paper and taped to a slug, which then has to craw along a lengthy series of tubes to deliver its message to the decoding sloth at the other end.

That might explain the day. Obviously they have a lot of slugs to train, after they have spent 2 years planning how and when they are going to train them.

I don't see why they can't get some computer science students to do it as a project or something. It would be a lot quicker than SPA
