I think a few people on the forums called up saying they needed to know their room number for insurance purposes and that worked.

What did you say exactly?

It went a bit like:

"Hi, I'm coming to Durham in October, and I'm trying to sort out my insurance. Would you be able to tell me my room number?"

Then I was told just to put the college address, but she said I can have my room number anyway. Asked me my name and told me my number. Easy :yep:

I know there's a list of societies on the DSU site but it doesn't seem completely up to date. Just wondering if there's any guitar society or anything?

Correct.

Do you know what law states that water must be given free of charge?

Few questions regarding the internet at Durham:

1. To use webcams you have to use Skype right? It won't let you send or recieve them on msn?

2. Can they (Durham ITS) see what you look at when you're on their network?

3. If so, am I likely to get a slapped wrist for going on sites that let you stream tv off them?
1. No Idea
2. Yes, but in practise unless you are using very silly amounts of bandwidth in the daytime then they wont look.
3. Nope. Everyone goes on them.

1. Yes, I've got webcams working on skype but not on msn.

2. They can see apparently, but I doubt they care. There's a few thousand people on the network, all on the internet, so they probably don't have time.

3. I know lots and lots of people who've streamed and no one's ever been contacted with a warning not to.

Excellent, cheers :yy:

When I say streaming though, I don't mean iplayer kinda thing, more sites that let you stream lost/heroes etc..

That's annoying / pointless :frown: Means I have to get my mates to download Skype ...
Yeah, they will be fine.

Alright, newspaper related question here. Do the colleges (Mary's particularly) provide newspapers each day? I ask because I've got quite attached to reading The Times with breakfast over the past two years, so I'd quite like to be able to continue.

If they're not available, though, I can get it for 25p a day at "participating retailers". Does anybody know if there are any such participating retailers in Durham? Thanks!
Colleges don't as far as I know. However the DSU shop in their building will do you the time for 25p.

In Butler we had the papers in the JCR.
i think quite a few JCRs have newspapers. i know john's does, not sure if it's every day but certainly every week.

Thanks for the replies... I might end up buying them anyway, because I quite like having my own copy...

I know Mildert used to have them in my first year at breakfast, but I'm not sure if this is still going. There was a discussion about whether to get rid of it, as it was quite expensive and not many people read them.

I think cuths has newspapers in the JCR but i dunno if they have the Times there....ive never really bothered tbh since i quite enjoy being inside the "bubble" and being completely oblivious of anything going on outside durham..then again I am pretty much oblivious to everything irrespective of where I live so....i guess its just me

You know I can't find anything, except for The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005. I swear it's illegal though unless it's just 'standard practice' for us rather than legislation. It appears that whilst the Scottish Act has been influenced by England, we could do the same and legislate on the matter of refusing tap water ourselves.

I'm sure people are sick of hearing these now, but I've got a quick question about colleges. Basically I'm just looking for peoples' experiences of room sharing. Specifically in Trevelyan. Do they just share for one term, or could it be for longer? I'd like a single room so I was going to opt for Mildert, but for some reason my mind just keeps coming back to Trev's.
In Trevs you're supposed to share for one term. A lot of people I know didn't share at all. Equally if you really loved it, you could share for all three terms.
