I would expect that you have to prepare a piece and do some sightreading.

Questions about the University Orchestra (the auditioned one)
1. Does it have a website? (Googled, but couldn't find it)
2. Does anyone know what is the procedure for auditions? Is there a set piece? Do you have to do aural/sight reading/scales
3. If nobody knows, who could I email?

Thanks

You have to play a one minute prepared piece and do two bits of sightreading (taken from pieces they are going to play). You can sign up for an audition at the fresher's fair in the DSU, I love DUOS, have so much fun with them!!
Good luck!

OK, I presume you won't have to play with an accompaniment.

Gah, I'm never going to get in..

No accompaniment necessary, and you might well do, doesn't hurt trying!

Yeah and if you don't get in, don't worry, you can always join Castle Orchestra instead!

Good luck with the DUOS audition though.

There's a Hill College Orchestra too which is supposedly of a pretty high standard.
For Hild Bede students:
1) Is anything planned for freshers on Sunday 30th between 4 and 6pm? I'm.. y'know, busy.
2) I notice the handbook indicated the breakfast on Monday will be 8 to 8.45am. Is that just a one-off for scheduling reasons, or will I not be eating breakfast much this year?

Ta.

1) Tsch, not even in Durham and already making other plans... ! I'm sure there'll be stuff planned, but none of it's obligatory, you don't have to partake in anything, it's not school!
2) In Mildert, breakfast started that early, but I'm sure it went on for longer than 45 mins....I only went to breakfast about 4 times all year though. I just had cereal/ cereal bars in my room so I wouldn't have to get up before 10 ....
Hmm, "Choral evensong in the Chapel"... orrrr Ireland vs Argentina in the bar. Such decisions

Lots of people will be watching the rugby, don't worry!

Hehe, well, considering there will be about 3 flute spaces, then probably not.

Thanks for the good luck!

I am planning to join an orchestra of some sort definitely, and the Trevs flute choir.

Yeah but Castle Orchestra rehearses in the Castle. Which makes it 1000000000000000000000000000000 times better than any other orchestra.

Does anybody have a TV tuner thing, that they stick in their laptop to get TV channels? What's the signal like? Can you get most channels? And do you bother with getting a TV license if you have that rather than a TV?
Questions, questions, questions!
Reply 154
Sadly, you will need a license for that!
It will receive the same channels as a TV.

on the other hand the hill orchestra rehearses at Aidan's, which means I won't have to lug my 'Cello too far, which is always a plus.

I don't know whether there's any point in me auditioning for DUOS, I seriously doubt I'd get in. I'm about grade 7 standard. - DUOS is grade 8+ right?
Though apparently they're desperate for Cellos. Advice?

You never know unless you try! But yeah, DUOS is a very high standard.
bothering and needing is different!

yep, as eggman said if your recieving the usual channels(terresterial or digital, typical TV, freeview type box, or PC/laptop adaptor) you need to get a TV license or your breaking the law.

Though from what I hear a good number of people don't and they risk it. I've read about many of the technicallities. Like they can't come in unless you let them(or your cleaner/flat mates/landlord) or they have a search warrant. - Though not being let in is good suspicous reason to get a warrant. And the equipment has to be set up (e.g. no arieal plugged in if you just watch videos).

If you do get a TV license, don't get it until October so that you can claim back 3 months of non-use for the summer.

TV Licensing is a joke anyway, you're suppose to have a license even for watching BBC news online from their website, and any of the channel 4 on demand stuff aswell.
Friends of mine kept getting letters asking them to pay up even though they didn't even have a TV.
I'm sure with a little effort, you can get away without one. Not that I'd recommend that.
edit: there was a big story with the BBC about people getting nicked for watching the world cup online without a license.
