I've got an offer to study Combined Arts in Durham and been offered Trevelyan as my college. Although i think it would be stupid no to take up the offer as im hoping to study mainly english lit and history [for which duham is the best], im kinda stil dubious because, although im academically successful im not overly hard working and love to have fun! I live near belfast where the student life is amazing every night. Durham is a smaller city with no the best nightlife, but is it managable?
Also i put in an open college choice but really wanted to go to collingwood. Although im not sporty AT ALL, it seemed like the least stuffiest more easy going fun kinda place. Would Trevelyan be okay in your opinion. I don't want to make a fuss and change, just need reassuring. Also although in Trevs it states gown wearing occasions occur every fortnight, is it completely compulsory on the pain of death to wear a gown?cos i just cant see it happening!!
Sorry for the long post:smile:
Pretty much all the hill colleges are fairly casual so I wouldn't worry about that. Not sure about the gowns.

I recommend you come to the open day in March and see if Durham seems like a good fit.

If you're studying the same modules then yes, otherwise the lecturer will have to teach it twice (which would be silly)

Not in the city centre, no. There's one in the Arndale centre (a small shopping centre just outside the city). But nowhere easily accessibly in the city centre. Good job too, McDonald's is evil and you're just gaurenteed litter. I don't think one will ever open in Durham. I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't try to open on a few years ago but were told to bugger off. Can't have a Mcdonalds in a pretty historic city.

With Greggs, Peters Bakery and Subway (plus a Bimbi's for fish and chips) who needs McDonalds?

Eadaoin

Temperatures are faily moderate, so not reall (there certainly aren't many hot people today).

I'm so dry...I'd say average, just like any other uni.

Eadaoin

Never been a big fan of it myself (horribly brutalist building too). You have Revolver on a Saturday night which is the "indie" night.
I'm not a current student (so I shouldn't answer, but I'm not one for rules), but I am a similiar person to you in wanting nightlife (and I live locally), and going to go and do a similar course (well, same, but Social Sciences instead of Arts). So I've thought about this, and I'm putting the Uni before the area (turning down Manchester in the process).

Reason being, Newcastle isn't far to travel (< 15 minutes by train), although getting back can be hard. An option is to have a friend at Newcastle to go stay at the halls of when you go out there (stereotype, but a lot of Irish people go to Newcastle so you might know someone from Belfast?). So, in that respect, you can actually get the nightlife of arguably England's best student city.

I can't comment on hot people :s-smilie: But there's more girls at Durham than males.
Now.. I've got a question, just a quick one about accommodation.

If your offer is unconditional, you're obviously guaranteed to get in. Does this mean I'd pretty much be getting the accommodation I want, as they can assign it to me for definite/first, as I'd 100% be going there? (i.e., a bit like offers which are sometimes made first to those holding their grades already.)

Just wondering as I'm particularly keen on being self-catered and have the college which have a combination of both types of accommodation.

Accommodation isn't dealt with until after the A Level results are out in August so that they know exactly how many students they have to house.

Lol thanks for the help!
Yeh im nearly definitely sure im going, its between Durham and Edinburgh. Couple more questions:smile:
Is Trevs a lively enough college?
Whats the deal with the gowns, totally compulsary?
You must have misinterpreted my previous question :P i meant were there many aesthetically pleasing people at Durham?
Also are you allowed alcohl in your rooms?I need a good cocktail to wake me up in the morning...(joke)
Reply 1929
Oh also, are you allowed to use facilites of other colleges?
For example the Pizza shop in Collingwood?

The Hill colleges aren't as traditional as the Bailey colleges (being newer) and, as far as I'm aware, gowns aren't compulsory for matriculation at Trevs. I may be wrong.

I was being silly, I knew what you meant. Like I said before, pretty average. Plenty of pretty Rah types if that floats your boat.

Take whatever you want into your room. You'll be a big girl :p:

If formals require gowns, then yes, you will have to wear one. In any case, you'll look pretty silly if you're the only one not dressing up as a character from a Harry Potter film.

Trevs is awesome - really friendly from what I've seen and you get to live in a hexagon. How many people on this planet can say that :p:?

It's university - I'd say most people have at least some form of alcohol in their rooms. *eyes up Baileys*

Of course there are attractive people in Durham... just like there are all over the world.

Here's something about the modules you can do:

I'm assuming "Europe East and West" will probably have a lot to do with communism.

Sorry to butt in, but there was a McDonald's for years in Durham City. It closed down a couple of years ago, can't remember what it is now - a bank or building society I think.

Things like bars and food outlets in other colleges - yes, you can use them.

There's a 2nd year History module on the social history of the USSR, and a special subject, which is a triple module focusing on primary evidence, on the USSR as well. In first year the closest you'll get is the Cold War module I imagine.

Sarcasm doesn't travel well on the Internet. Especially when you're thick (as I am) and don't really get sarcasm anyway :s-smilie:

We both have the same name because we both chose it. It's a great name. I don't know why original River picked the name but I only chose it because I was listening to Nick Drake's Riverman. I didn't really put much thought into it as I thought I was just going to be around for a few days. Then within eight months I become a mod

Grab yourself a rich young man? Marry into money and be a lady of luxury. That doesn't sound appealing? :p:

Eadaoin

A few about, yes. Although domestic-wise the student population is southern English dominant (at undergraduate level, postgraduates always more varied) and. But I knew a handful and I'm sure there are many more.

Eadaoin

Other River is so she'll be able to tell you more than I can. But there's currently a reasonable amount in the modern history content. A second year module plus a triple module on Stalinism in the final year.

http://www.dur.ac.uk/resources/faculty.handbook/degrees/frameworks/v100.pdf

Remember that modules are liable to change and not all modules are avaiable each year.

Was it on Saddler Street? When did it close, when the Arndale centre opened up? I was messing about on google maps and it does list a McDonald's there.

Anyway, the point remains that there isn't one now. I don't suppose it was a particularly welcome and the Arndale's probably a better location (larger?). If it was located on Saddler Street I can't imagine it being a great location.

There's a Burger King on North Road if you're into that sort of thing.
