Hi guys,

Really struggling nailing down a Dissertation topic. My initial idea was studying the effectiveness of advertising through social media in UK based SME's. However this idea was severely criticized by my tutor due to being unable to prove effectiveness easily. Im wanting to study social media use for advertising in SME's, however my tutor wanted me to focus it on a specific industry which i didn't want to do because the interviews i have set up are from varying industry types. I was thinking possibly focussing on the north east region if necessary and possibly how social media advertising use can impact customer engagement or something. Was just looking for opinions on this really. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regardless of your topic, you will have to be more specific about who you target with the investigation. You simply can't take a scattergun approach and investigate several industries - each with unique challenges and opportunities alongside different social media audiences - and gain any real insights.

Make it something specific; how does social media promote brand loyalty/improve perceptions/influence consumers/etc. within the retail sector in the UK? In any case, your investigation in to this would focus more on the end user over the business, so don't be discouraged by lack of access.
