Northumbria Ethnic Diversity

Hi, I'm considering going to University of Northumbria - making it my first choice in fact. But I've heard people say about the lack of racial diversity and there's hardly any black people there, and also that Newcastle is full of racists. Obviously I want to go to a uni where I can be comfortable where I go and have fun. Are the any people of colour that can talk about their experiences in Newcastle and at UON?

Search for your subject online. I found this information on my course, which shows that 86% of students are from outside the UK. http://university.which.co.uk/northumbria-university-n77/finance-and-investment-management-3-years-8750-n390

http://university.which.co.uk/northumbria-university-n77 This website shows that 12% of all students are foreign, which I think gives an insight into the diversity on campus.

I am white British myself, but a friend at Northumbria knows a few people there who are Asian and black and they have never encountered any racism issues.

Sorry for replying to an old post, I am just bored .

Northumbria University in terms of diversity at least for a hong kong Chinese student is not enough, In another university such as Keele, Nottingham has a larger hong kong Chinese population, however, there are bigger amount of other Asian groups, like Chinese Malaysian, and Indians. In terms of black people again the minority.

I did some research, the average white population in Newcastle is about 88 per cent, Gateshead around 95?, and durum 98, so this region is fairly white-dominated. The people here have a geordie accent which for a semi international student like myself was a barrier, however, I now have a girlfriend from the south shield, therefore I understand it well enough now. I was comfortable going clubbing and all, people seem nice. The city feels like a true British city, with uniqueness ?

In term of racism, considering it is a mostly white area: if you are from Birmingham the difference is night and day, I have only encountered 2 to 4 racism comment so far out of 3 years in uni, one in quayside ( the friend with that racist was uncomfortable with her comment and asked her to stop) and another one is a kid while I was cycling, so overall no problem at all. I was in a school in Nottingham( more diverse), and some black and white kids were really nasty towards me with all sorts of Asian insults in the park, btw also in America, I think the black folks are beating Asians too, considering with the corona and everything that could provoke asian hate, no racism in Newcastle really.

In terms of the uni, the silver tier in teaching = poor learning experience, but I survived. Oh yeah, the town has a small china town, I came to Northumbria for that and that metro system, however, the frequency is so low that I end up driving, finding parking in heaten s easy too.
Overall, the uni experience for a true chinese/ asian student( if u are born here u can enjoy anywhere really) is very underwhelming, better off going Nottingham or sth. However, having a gf from here, enhanced my experience. So I would rate Northumbria uni for hong kong / Chinese miniority a
a 3/10 if u came alone, and 6.5/10 if u can integrate locally.
