Student Oyster Photocard

Ok, I received my card today but is there a way of topping it up online? I registered online but it seems i can only change my pin on my account.

Thanks

I thought you could, but maybe only once you've used it or something like that?

You can top it up at any Underground station with cash or a debit/credit card, or at shops that have the blue Oyster symbol.

Gggrrr that tfl website is so annoying. I've got a bigger conundrum for you, does anyone know how to top up the student oyster with an annual travelcard. This little task is proving fairly elusive to me

Just get it at the station if you cant use the website...

I've registered online on the 1st of september and haven't received anything yet.....just a confirmation letter that I registered online. ( i gave a uk address of course)

From the website I can click "Add/renew/top up ticket" then choose an annual travelcard.

You won't want 'annual' though, it's cheaper to use monthly ones (unless you're certain you'll be living in London in the holidays and using it). If you go to a ticket office they can give you any period longer than a month, e.g. 37 days or something, at the monthly rate. This is cheaper than buying a month and a week (for instance).

I applied online and I received mine today, but I didn't receive a PIN or anything like that. Also, when I log into the photocard section all it does is allow me to change my PIN. Where are all the top options?

Thats the same for me too! I think you can only top up online with a normal oyter card, not a student one.

Anyway like someone else said, we can top up at a station or newsagent no problem.

Andrikos, the same happened to me. I applied 1st september and nothing happened. So i did it a week after and now i have my card but a different reference number. On the 1st, i think the website messed up and gave wrong orders.
Go and register your card with the "proper" online system: https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster/entry.do.

This should accept your student Oyster card number and let you do all the normal stuff with it. The photocard system seems a bit crippled.

Beware: make sure it tries to sell you discounted period tickets and not adult rate ones.

I've not had a student oyster since the online applications came in, but my old oyster was registered (and still is) with the normal Oyster system and it lets me top-up online.

Sigh student oyster card is useless unless you are getting weekly/monthly etc (sad)...
Why can't they just give 70% off for single journey as well :frown:

I tried that, but when i add a new card, it asks for a secret answer! :s-smilie:

I cant remember putting a secret question lol
You should've put an answer to a security question on your application form, you need the answer to that to register the card. e.g. mother's maiden name. But it depends what you put in the box

You need that answer to do anything with your card online or on the phone.

Ahh damn, I don't think I put a secret answer in, I think it was optional?

Damn, can't I email them and get this sorted?

I applied online and there wasnt a security question and it says my card is registered.

Lol haha, same problem with me. Pretty sure there was no security question to fill in. I'm actually commuting so thats why I want an annual travelcard (they offered me Piccadilliy Court so I thought I might as well save myself £4k and stay at home). Furthermore I want it at student rates, so xaxa though logically it would make sense to click on the 'top up oyster' tab its not quite so simple as they only offer the standard adult rate travelcard.

OK, I don't have a student card any more (after the year, it becomes a normal adult card).

If you're commuting from outside London it might be cheaper to get a zonal travelcard on a Student oyster, and a season ticket between the furthest station (e.g. in zone 6) and your home. If you do this, I think the train you take has to stop at the zone 6 station.

(Since you're getting a student oyster you might have worked that out, but I'll write it down in case anyone else finds it useful.)

Hmm actually xaxa come to think of it you probably are right. I've just done the maths and looked at the term dates so yeah it its cheaper for me to just buy monthly.

I'm trying to get my student oyster online but it says i need my university/college enrolment number. Is that the same as my CID? If not, what did you guys use?

Thanks
Yea its your CID

I didn't bother with the student one... not that I use the tube too much. Normal pay-as-you-go costs £1.50 per journey in zone 1. How much does it cost with a student oyster?
