Going on my own to a party- what do I do?

So I've been invited to someone's 18th tonight and I was gonna go with a friend, as whilst I know quite a few of the people going to say hello to or chat with in class, a lot of them are in the same friendship group which I am not.

Now my friend isn't going because he's ill, and I'm feeling a bit apprehensive and awkward about going on my own, who to talk to and how to not be a loner without intruding on people or being a tag-along.

What is acceptable behaviour to find someone to talk to at a party etc? Will drink which'll help, but I'd like to have an enjoyable evening and socialise rather than being on my own.

Of course you will! Anyone who is weird about you talking to them /that you are alone there are weird themselves and not worth your time.
Be confident, be yourself and if you are drinking make sure it's not too much/ you can get home safely and aren't taken advantage of (Cab/someone picking you Up)

I'm just a bit shy (in specific situations like these, not always), I don't really know how to walk up and approach a group or what to say.

So was I and I know it's really tough but the only cure for shyness is just getting stuck in and introducing yourself. You'll be surprised how shy and desperate for someone to come up to them people are! Everyone feels like you do at some point :smile:

Thanks for the advice- I know who they are though so I can't really introduce myself without looking like a weirdo haha. Yeah, they are pretty much all friends and go out together a lot so I feel like I actually will be the only one looking for someone

So what!? Same rules apply and if they think they are too cool to respond kindly, again move on and realise you haven't lost out at all :smile:
