slag the Irish all you like. But if any of yous were to do some research, consistently Northern irish students out-perform their English counterparts not only at GCSE but at A-levels aswell, hence the University of Cambridge's 'northern irleand initiative' which oxford decided to steal from them and adopt last year aswell. We are clearly better students but unfortunately the cream doesnt always rise to the top.

So kevster, did you enjoy the rugby today?

There is no bias against Irish people. Methinks the grapes smell a little sour.

More like in your case, the milk just becomes sour. Like grapes
Actually, I loved it! I was supporting Wales becuase Eddie is now going to lose his job and we will finally get a proper manager in who can take us to the upper echelons of world rugby that we visited a few years ago. We will be back, believe me.

fair enough...
I was in a pub for the last 20 minutes or so, standing next to a local, making comments. He looked at me and said I hope you're not Welsh. I moved away to where the other Welsh students were before I took my coat off revealing my (nice and warm) Wales rugby top.
And then on the coach on the way back there was a lot of cheering, laughter and clapping when the scotland vs england results were called out every so often... Seems there were a fair few Welsh people around

Congratulations to those who've got offers since the last time I said it
You're all going to have a great time if you choose Durham.

I'm sure no one here intends to or would genuinely insult Irish people kevster.

Did you get all 5 rejections by any chance? I know its a lot easier to face by blaming it on something else out of your control... some of my friends blamed their rejections on coming from a state school/poor background.

Its just rubbish. You are considered on your academic and personal life based on the data you hand to the university.

If the data isn't good enough/presented well enough, you might not get an offer.

They don't just say "Ooh he's Irish. **** that!"
thats very naive of you MHSC.
let me give you another scenario.
a person in my year applied for medicine at manchester, he got 10A*'s and AAAA, and was not even offered an interview. coincidence? I think not.

who negged me? this is becoming ridiculous.

Could be anyone actually. And before you ask, it wasn't me. I just find this all amusing to be honest.

But I have to agree with Jurisprude. Admissions tutors have been doing their jobs for awhile now. They might have noticed something in your friend's application that they did not like. You can't say it's because he's Irish.
I can.
I've seen people on this thread with unbelievably inferior CV's compared to the people I know. Its a fact of life, discrimination exists, now accept it!

no, I very much doubt it was coincidence. It was far more likely to be because, quite simply, he wasn't good enough. Plenty of people apply for medicine and don't get offers. Presumably his personal statement wasn't good enough, or something along those lines. It will not be because he is Irish. Now get over yourself.

Even if it did exist, whining about it is going to do what exactly...

Discrimination against Irish people does not exist in the admissions departments of a university like Durham. "Now accept it!" right back at you.

Its not all about grades at all like you seem to think it is. If anyone here is being naive it is you, wanting to blame a problem on something that is totally not your fault. I used to do the same, admittedly when I was a much younger teen. I've grown out of such silly things.

Edit: Oh and, 2 of my friends with better grades than your friend got there final rejection for medicine yesterday (on the same day, yes). They also have a years worth of work experience. Its a TOUGH course to get into.
yea your right Aula, why not hop over to the university of Manchester thread and see for yourself. There is people getting offers to study medicine with grades like 5 A's 4B's and 3C's and not even striaght A's at Alevel!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's an absolute disgrace. How can you defend manchester not giving him an interview, for god sake he would have gotten one at oxford and came close to an offer if he had of applied.

how do you know what people's cv's are like? Perhaps your friends get better grades, it is entirely possible, but that doesn't necessarily mean they've got better cv's. Maybe these applicants have better work experience, maybe they've shown more commitment to the degree subject, perhaps they just have better personal statements. I'm sure according to grades, and what you can see of me on here, there are far better students than me. However, fact remains, I had a damn good personal statement and had done a lot of work experience. Okay, so archaeology is not the hardest subject to get into, but I think the fact that I got 6 offers and Bristol offered me a scholarship as well as sending me a really nice letter counts for something.
sorry to bring deNvo up again. but he got 20 in the LNAT. my friend got 20 aswell, yet he received an email saying his LNAT score was the reason he did not achieve a place. explain that please?

I have two Irish friends who got five offers, one who now lives in England and one who studied in northern ireland.

Surely it cant be healthy to be suspicious that all admission tutors hate the Irish. I get the feeling you're a little bitter about something, kevster.

And, no offence, but if discrimination did exist, why would it be solely against the Irish? Why not everyone? The Scottish, the Welsh, the internationals? There obviously isnt because people in ALL those groups get into Uni. You claiming its JUST the Irish? Wow  Get over yourself.

Speculation will get you nowhere.
(except in archaeology, but that's a different matter...)
Since he didn't apply for medicine, how can you be sure that he would have got an interview?

You want us to explain the obvious to you?
Sorry when did I state that discrimination is solely against the Irish and when did I say all admissions tutors hate the Irish. Please dont put words into my mouth.

Haha Northern Irish racism! It's rife. Often I hear university admissions folk muttering about those Northernly Paddy bastards.

And I'm sure your friend got rejected from Oxford as well because he was Irish, not inadequate. Period.
