Do you know their grades? Their personal histories? Their extra-currics? Their work experience? How do you KNOW his PS was any good? Teachers and pupils are **** at knowing what's decent. It could have been a pretentious piece of rubbish for all you know.

yes he blows de.novo out of the water. Yes I've read it, it's a fine piece of work. Hmmmm, surely all p.s's are pretentious, because when you think of it, what is their purpose? Do you want to hold back and not mention allll you've been involved in. It's your chance to show them what you've done and how you managed to do it? Who else here can say they won a political competition out of thousands of apps to go to westminster and meet the PM, huh? Didn't think so. However, that does not bother me. What does is the fact the admissions tutors told him a BLATANT LIE. They said, although his app was very commendable, they believed that his score in the LNAT was not sufficient enough to atttain a place, the competition was too stiff and he just did not cut it with the 20. Hmmmmmm?? Fallacious? de.novo? 20? Sopme other person on this thread 15? Swiss fairy who if she does attain a place, and best of luck to her, 19?
I rest my case.

how many times have you honestly been out in N.I It's by no means London but it certainly punches above its weight. Nights out in Ireland are always eventful, no matter what part, we haven't got a reputation for nothing, we know how to drink and have a good time. In durham, there is a severe shortage of niteclubs and decent bars and clubs. you'd have seen the whole night scene in freshers week for christs sake. In london, you'll still be boucning around new places well into your last year. Thats the beauty. Durham is very mundane, you don;t want to be confined to your college, you want to go out and meet other people from other uni's and other backgrounds. That is very limited in Durham whether you like it or not. It's your stereotypical North of England City.

The question back at you: How many times have you honestly been out in Durham?
Just because you have a rep for drinking does not mean you have a decent nightlife you know.
Also London nightlife. Honestly how much money do you want to spend dragging yourself across London, paying to get in, paying for expensive drinks, paying to get a cab back...
Why would I care who I get to meet at Durham? I live in Coventry for God's sake, I've had enough diversity to last me a lifetime. I have enough friends from different backgrounds to appreciate that there is no point judging people on where they're from or what class they are. I love the North East. At least people smile at you on the streets rather than barging past and frowning a la London.
Maybe people obsessed with "nightlife" are the sort who struggle to make friends unless lots of alcohol and load music are involved?

I'm afraid if he put it the way you did then the arrogance would put any admissions tutor off!
And was it simply "Your LNAT mark was not high enough" or was it "compared to other candidates your LNAT was not as high as many and across the board was considered weaker."
You have no idea why the people who got 15 were allowed in. Maybe they have had really tough extenuating circumstances? Maybe they're very strong in other areas? Many many applicants will have had higher than 20 and therefore, although it's a commendable score, he clearly didn't back it up elsewhere.
If it was just grades then many of my friends would have got into Durham, equally some would NOT have got into Oxbridge. I'm afraid they're looking for something your friend clearly hadn't got. They may not have expressed it very eloquently, but hey ho.

Unless you've been out there, you can't comment. Anyway you didn't answer: where do you currently live Kevster?

it's not really fair criticising you but it really is sad that you are oblivious to the blatant discrimination that exists in admissions not only in Durham but throughout England.

I live in Dublin, party capital of Europe:biggrin:
Eh? I thought that was somewhere in Spain.

As i have said several times (but you seem to be refusing to take notice of) i qualify for extenuating circumstances.

But just for to satisfy you a little more (because i find it quite insulting that you are implying that i may only get an offer from Durham because i'm not Irish or that i dont deserve a place that your "friend" should have got) i'll tell you a bit about my acedemic history.

In the UK i was taking 13 GCSES. I was predicted 8A*s and 5 A's. I achieved the highest marks possible in both my Maths, Biology and Chemistry coursework. It was assumed i would go on to do very well in A levels too.

In the UK i also did a wide range of extra curricular activities including (but not limited to) several sports teams, drama club, three choirs, an orchestra, the debating society, school council, my local town youth council, hampshire county youth forum and was a member of the UK Youth Parliment.

I moved to Switzerland before i took my GCSE's as it was the only chance we had to move and it was assumed i would do well.

Despite only doing ONE year of the FOUR year course out here which is equivilant to GCSEs, i got 47 out of 52 in the IBMYP exams.

I was predicted at the start of the IB to get at 41 points (not including bonus points) but things didnt go to plan. I've explained the situations before but to summerise, my step dad walked out after three months of marriage, my remaining in Switzerland was at risk, we had no house or money without him, two weeks later my mother had a stroke and i had to look after her and my little sister while she recovered from heart surgery (i missed a lot of school). Then we found out my bastard of a step dad had been shagging his secretary since before the wedding (excuse the language) and my mum had a nervous break down. I had to take more time off school to look after her. Eventually (and this is something i havent told anyone on here except my bf of course be he knows cos he looked after me through it) i had a nervous break down of my own and had to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital as a danger to myself for 10 days. I missed a lot of school and my grades slipped.

However, this doesnt make me any less worth of an offer from Durham and as i previously said, i take huge offence at the suggest that i dont. I managed 28 IB points in my mock exams in February without even revising and without knowing a lot of the syllabus i missed while away from school (while everyone else is doing in class review i'm learning it for the first time). I've recently been given new predictions for the IB of 36 - 38 points.

I've worked hard and i probably have a lot more experience of real life than your "friend" and am just as capable acedemically.

Durham is NOT racist, your "friend" was just unlucky. Accept it and get over it.

I thought you said you lived in Northern Ireland?
If you live in Dublin then I am exceedingly jealous, love it there. Also you're very biased about Irish nightlife if you live in the capital.

Woah swiss-fairy, you are an incredibly strong fairy! Those are exactly the kind of extenuating circumstances that people who have lived happy little lives can never comprehend. I'm so sorry you've had it so rough. Is everything settling down now?
I want you at Durham *sulks, then hunts out her invisible cancan costume*
Aww thanks Reblet. Things are settling. Mums going through the divorce at the moment and he keeps getting drunk and phoning to either beg to come back, tell her he hates her and hopes she dies or to tell her its all her fault what happened but its ok cos he just brought a fararri.

I'm just focusing on school now, only have four weeks left, then a week then exams and i have to do well or i'll never forgive myself. Once the exams are over i'm going to start to come of my medication cos i dont want to be relying on it once i'm at uni, so just giving you advanced warning, i might become a tad unpredictable!

To be honest, i cant wait to get away from home. While everyone else is worrying about having so much reponsibilty i'm looking forward to losing responsibilty for my mum and 10 year old sister. Mum and I have had a bit of a role swap but i think its time she became the mum again.

Can tell i'm tired, i'm blabbing ALL my personal stuff! I normally post this stuff anon!!!

I laughed a LOT at the thought of an invisible cancan costume.... i think i have one somewhere.... i just cant seem to find it!

I'm off to bed now i think cos i'm far too tired! Nothing from Durham (or Warwick but shush cos i mustnt mention other uni's on this thread!) grrrrrr :frown:

swiss_fairy you are an amazing person, and I really hope you get into Durham.

:hugs:

I should bloody hope she is divorcing him. Are you both coming back to live in England?
I'm sure you'll ace your exams, you're clearly bloody determined and have done ridiculously well already. And I like unpredictable. I can cope with a bit of ecentricity... although you can't get much more eccentric than BANNED...
I hope Durham and *whispers* Warwick get back to you soon. Actually, I hope both give you offers and you chose Durham and come and live in the land of ducks!

Nighty night! Sleep well!

I hope you did not mention that bit on your application, although Durham tend to be quite understanding.

I did not say they were racists, I said, now for I don't know how many times, they are discriminatory, there is a wealth of difference.

Why are you quoting HMK, when his comment had nothing to do with yours?

And then you rambled on about the Irish being **** on and so forth. The implication was Durham are racists, even if you did not directly say it in those words

in which case you have misunderstood my implication, quite common when your doing a natural sciences degree. Ouch..
