I found out why I got rejected (for History); it was because they want at least 5A*s at GCSE, and they aren't prepared to make any exceptions regardless of PS/ASs/A2 Predictions/References.

Oh well :frown:.

Is it only 5A* now? I swear it was 7 last year. Anyway, you have an offer from York (which, incidentally, is lovely), and you've still got 3 more places to hear from, so try not to get too disheartened about it even though I know how frustrating and upsetting rejection can be.
That rule is so stupid - I thought it was 6 or 7 A*s, because two of my friends got rejected for History yesterday, and they both had 6A*s.

I'm sorry, though, I don't know why they do it; ASs are more important, undoubtedly.
Got my acknowledgement through today
although after the discussion of GCSE importance above i'm not holding out much hope :frown:

To be honest, after meeting some PhD Physicists it wouldn't surprise me at all that they do it just for 'fun' :p:. We're a weird lot!

Again thanks for your help

Ive just got a letter through tday invitin me to an interview for Physics at Durham as well but on 6th December. Let me know how urs goes, i didnt have a clue that they interviewed either! Which college are u applyin for?
I was sure the GCSE thing was a myth? I got a Law offer of AAB last year (standard being AAA) and only have 2 A*s at GCSE.. Don't see why PPE would be any different? And they can't discount grades maaan, that's stupid :p:

No worries, it just says "Your application has been received by a College. A decision has not yet been made" not sure whether it makes much diffrence tho cos they cud still reject you from tht stage anyway.

Yep, same here. Haven't heard anything about interviews yet though.
Great. I am now addicted to two application tracking software thingy.

It must've been so much easier back in the days of paper forms! *sigh* So much temptation to check track and AES every half an hour.

AHHHHH! I'm going to have to ring them up and tell them to decide over the phone. I just want to know now. :frown: They made me wait last year, I can't do all that again. #emo#

I applied for Collingwood, you?

No problem , I'll get in touch when it's over. All the best with yours!
After reading that Admonitor got rejected for not having 5A* for History, does anyone know if there are any truths or even myths about GCSE grades required for NatSci?? :s-smilie: Thanks!
Yikes! There are Nat Sci people getting offers and I haven't even received an acknowledgment yet. I am now officially worried.

Congratulations to everyone who's gotten an offer till now btw.
The GCSE thing is basically a myth- a few very popular subjects, like History, can sometimes be reduced to choosing between applicants based on GCSEs if there really is no other way of differentiating them (because if you have two or more applicants with identical grades and equally good personal statements, and only one place, what else can you do without resorting to eeny meeny miny mo?). The vast majority of departments won't do it, because GCSEs mean **** all academically. I'm sorry to hear you were unlucky Admonitor :frown:
I believe it's just History, so I wouldn't worry. The History department are very open about it - if NatSci haven't said anything, it's probably a sign that they're sensible and focus more on the overall picture.
ATTENTION ALL PHYSICS APPLICANTS:

I have noticed quite a few people asking about interviews in physics, here is the info.

If you have an interview it means you are 99% likely to have an offer. The reason they are inviting you for interview is to sell the place to you to get you to come. The interview itself is just a friendly chat with a member of the academic staff. My interviewer told me there is nothing I could do short of pulling a knife on him that would stop me getting an offer. They only tend to invite up those people who haven't been on an open day.

That said, you do have to attend the interview in order to recieve your offer.

Hope that clears things up.

(Also, I am going to be interviewee repping in Van Mildert for the week beginning the 19th Nov. So if your interview is in that week you may be lucky enough to meet me )
