Hey, I'm hoping to apply to Durham for Engineering and feel like I've got a fairly decent chance.

... Thing I have no iea about though is what the interview will be like... I've mentioned in my PS a couple of books I've read but I have a habit of not remembering most of the stuff I read lol. I've got the ideas they were trying to get across though. I'm just hoping I don't go into an interview not remembering some important bits and looking like my PS was faked and a bit of :turtle: ...

So I was wondering if you could let me know what sort of detail interviews go into and if its worth reading them again? (Bearing in mind I am soooo busy all of the time... and might not gain a lot from double reading them) Thanks

Interviews at college are generally informal chats, I was just asked about things I wrote on my personal statement, then was asked about what things i wanted to be involved in at uni, what i want to do in the future and why i chose the college.

The department interview (for computer science) was focused on the subject. Things like... what you think you will gain from studying it, why you chose it, and recollection of any experience in the subject came up. Then I was asked some basic CS and Maths questions, asked what I thought I would get at A level and was then told i would get an offer.

The interview process seemed pretty informal, you really don't need to prepare... i didn't anyway. My interview at Durham was the same as interviews at other unis, so that should give you some idea if you've had one before.

hope that helped.

My Engineering interview in February 2006 was very casual. The interviewer asked me a maths question based on a graph (draw the graph of y=8/x) and a couple of questions about why I wanted to go to the Durham, and that was it really. Having said that, it could of course be harder this time around but best thing to do is to relax and not worry.

Durham don't base offers on interview at all really in my opinion. As long as you come across okay at the interview then your A levels will be more important. It's nothing like Oxbridge.

Seems really laid back and friendly, I can definately handle that. Thanks mates. I was just really hoping they wouldn't be there, on their high chairs proding me for stuff I obviously can't remember till this little piggy runs all the way home.
ok its just taken me along time to find this thread, becuase its been stickied!! wooottt! its now offical kidds.

anyway..

yep but you can always do 'open application' for your college, which is what me and a few other TSRers did.
Means the department will randomly choose which college you will go to.

Note that even if you choose a college, it may be full, and then your dept will choose a free college to put you in.
-It's the department that accepts you into Durham uni, so don't overly worry about colleges getting loads of applicants or making your PS please the chosen college.
-Everyone ends up loving the college they go to (or so I've heard and I don't see why not).
-A good place to start is to think if you want self-catered/fully-catered/half catered, ensuite/shared bathroom, single/shared bedroom.
-Then if you still need help deciding or have college questions you can ask in this thread: http://thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=457893 (or maybe see the answer there)
After weeks of indecisiveness and teetering on the edge of madness, I FINALLY applied last night.  That's a really big accomplishment for someone who can't even decide what to order for dinner. So YAY!

Ah this is so scary.
I wonder what percentage of us will even get accepted.
Crazy crazy stuff, I can't believe its time for us to go to Uni soon..

hi, i;m thinking of applying to Durham for Accounting and Financ. The course requires BBB and i'm predicted ABB (probably could change it to AAB). However, my GCSE;s arnt amazing. I got 4A's and 6B's. Got A in maths, history, geography and german and B's in eng lang/lit, art, bio, chem, physics. Does my GCSE's really matter or are my predicted grades enoough? Aprreciate it loads for the replies. Thanks.
they will make you an offer for whatever your predicted grades are!

so if you get predicted ABB, that will be your offer (was my offer by the way, i got AAB in the end)

the reason they do this is to keep students working hard at A2, if they made you a BBB offer now, you could probably ease of a bit and not work as hard this year.

the course isnt one of the most popular at Durham uni, and has only been running for 2years, so the entry grades arnt that high, you should be fine with your GCSE grades. Especially since you have an A in maths.

your GCSEs are okay, and while it's always hard to tell exactly what individual courses look for, your predicted grades are above the entry requirements so you've definitely got a fairly good chance I'd say. I'm not sure how competitive that course is, but you'll have higher predicted grades than some of the people applying. Could also depend on your AS results.

Rooftopcowboy... is that just something that course does? It's not a bad idea, but it relies on people being honest about their predicted grades I suppose.

yes, the head of the business/accounting/business finance courses said so

I think the predicted grades get sent with the UCAS application, i recall there being some sort of deadline were my teachers had to give a grade to everyone. Not sure if this system has changed.

its a good idea IMO as i said it keeps students working, if Durham had told me i needed BBC (the minimum offer back then) I could have just about not entered my final A2 exams, as id done well at AS..and id arrived at uni even more lazy!

I have to select my college of choice for Durham in the next few days, and haven't really given it much thought; so I'd really appreciate any advice about colleges;
I want an older college, as I want to go somewhere with a sense of history attached to it, and I preferably want it to be quite central (though I'm told that all Durham colleges are quite near each other) I'd really like it to be small and friendly as well.
Does anyone know a college that matches this description. From looking at the website I've narrowed it down to St Chad's and Hatfield, but the website doesn't really give a feel of life is like at these colleges.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi-good luck to everyone!!!!!!
I'm going to try and apply for Music at St. Chad's! Only cause' it's a very funny name!
Have fun, everyone!
Oh i didnt even get that at GCSE or A level to think about it and i do medicine. Then again at school i was the annoying little prat who actually dont really give a toss and i think my teachers predicted me AAAA for a bit of a laugh really. If u want to do something and ur given a target just aim for it and dont worry too much.
