Hopping Mad Kangaroo
It takes time to knock a meal together, plus some of the food we get in aidans I doubt you would be able to knock up easily, if at all.

I'm not after spectacular food; I'd be more than happy with beans on toast most nights (indeed, it is often what I settle for now, even with a whole range of food at my disposal).

I don't like the idea of communal meals so much anyway, so I think even if the lack of pre-prepared meals does prove a problem then it's somewhat of a mixed blessing anyway.

I guess it's mostly dependent upon the individual.

Erm, what exactly is the policy when Durham changes their typical offer for a course after someone has already applied to it (when the typical offer was lower). As in, someone I know applied to a BBB course which recently has been changed to ABB requirements. They already have the offer of an interview..so..what happens now?

Mmm... I shall be living off burnt toast in that case.

If they've been called for an interview, it means they're in the running well and truly.

Meh, its a lot more social to have a canteen and the communal meals. If you are happy cooking, thats up to you.

If they pass the interview they get an offer, probably of ABB, possibly BBB. It depends.

So us culinary delinquints who thrive off being social are a bit stuffed if we've got an offer from Josephine Butler...!

Well "stuffed" isnt the word I would use. Unless you applied directly there, its very unlikely that you would end up there.
Ignore HMK and his moaning about Butler being self-catered; he goes on about this every single time someone mentions Butler. I suspect he was traumatised in a bizarre cooking accident when he was a child or something.

I'm at Butler and couldn't cook much beyond pasta, rice and tinned soup when I started and I'm fine. You can cook by yourself but you can also cook with your flatmates if you want -- we've done a few communal meals for special occasions like the fake Christmas that we had earlier this week and they've turned out great. Being self-catered hardly makes you a hermit -- you've got a ready-made group of friends with your flatmates so their friends become your friends too, and there are usually a fair amount of people in the bar at night. The accommodation is the best in the uni and I will probably be missing having my own en-suite when I go home tomorrow.

Its not moaning, its a valid point. I would much rather not have to cook (although in some colleges the food is bad enough to coax me into doing it). Plus in third year we get our own en-suites and the like anyway. If you like cooking and being out quite a way then Butler is for you, on the other hand if you are lazy like myself, cooked food is a lot better option. Asides, there are people who have popped up here who don't like Butler at all, who actually live there.

There are always people who make mistakes and end up in a college they shouldn't be in. My friend who went to Hatfield and ended up moving to Johns where she's much happier for example. I also know some other people at Johns who don't like it much and always complain about how quiet it is (and how full of vicars)
Where you should go entirely depends on what type of a person you are. But likelihood is that wherever you end up you'll enjoy it.
I wanted to go to JB, and got my offer from there. But I didn't get the grades to meet my offer, so they didn't have room for me at JB and I got moved to Aidan's instead, where I'm very happy.
My only advice would be that if you hate cooking, don't apply to JB (and try and apply somewhere you can live in throughout your uni career). Otherwise you should be fine. And at least at JB you get ovens in which you can make cakes. That's one of the worst things about being catered. No ovens :frown:
I'm pretty sure that you have to live out in second year regardless of which college you are, so you kind have to learn to cook sometime...

There are some people living in second year in Aidan's, but I think you have to be fairly lucky to get to do it, but generally yep, you will have to cook at some point.

And even if you manage to avoid cooking throughout uni, you will end up having to cook at some point in your life.

Its interesting how no one at all from Aidan's has complained about the college on here at all, where as Butler have 2 people complaining about it. Although I admit our kitchens blow, electric cookers and no ovens mean cooking isn't much fun.

Their break isnt as long as ours, but I suspect you could still be waiting until january and beyond.

huh? all the holidays are the same length of time.
You are extremely unlikely to get an offer over Christmas (I think)

They work longer than term time, to teach postgrads and get on with research. Though the chances of getting an offer over Christmas is still small.

ah, okay that makes more sense. I thought you were referring to the college *facepalm*
