I was just taking a look at the university map and realised that we are literally neighbours! Well hello!

Haha you're right we are! :wavey: hello there

Haha yeah definitely. My 'get fit at uni' plan may work without me actually having to actually do any sport! Just lots, and lots, and lots of walking!

I was thinking of going from the college (if I'm made an offer  ) to the department by bike, lol. Is Durham hilly ?

Did you apply to Grey like LieDown? Yeah parts of Durham is rather hilly. I'd rather walk, just cause I don't see myself cycling uphill.
Reply 1903
Nah I dont think Id take a bike, even if it is a long walk. I cant see myself cycling either, nevermind up hills! Walking up hills is hard enough!.....

Nope, lol, I made an open application, I wasn't able to choose a college, lol.
I love to cycle so that's why I asked, lol, but if it is hilly, then I'll probably forget it :ninja:

I just saw what you applied for. Always wanted to learn Russian. But my knowledge in the language only extends to 'hello', 'thank you' and 'where's the washroom?' :p: And I hope you get an offer and are placed into a Hill college. We're so much cooler.

*expects tirade from Bailey college folk*

Actually, If I could choose, I'd go to Castle, Hatfield, St Chad's, St Cuth's or St John's, but only because I have a bridge to cross and I'm at the department, lol. But I don't really care, lol, if I'm made an offer, I'd be happy enough with what I have, lool.
if you dont mind me asking how did you receive your offer? UCAS or letter?

My durham track updated the other day to say my application was forwarded to a college, and I got the letter from St Aidan's today, and my ucas still hasn't updated. I wouldn't worry though, I'm sure you'll hear soon; it would seem they give out offers in batches. Good luck

Aula
Mary's would only be a couple of minutes closer, and I'm not sure Hild Bede would be closer. The other Bailey colleges would be closer, but it's not a huge distance. There's plenty of people here who do subjects based in the Bailey, and the furthest anyone has to walk is half an hour, which is to the education department (I have a classics lecture there).
As for the architecture, Aidan's doesn't photograph well. When I heard I'd been moved here after my results I was very upset, thinking that it was hideous. However, I now think it's quite lovely. Obviously there are other buildings that are nicer, but it's really not that bad, and I'd now say it's a lot nicer than JB (which is where I applies
).

Thanks; I think I should probably be a bit more open minded about St Aidan's, I guess I was just bit miffed about being randomly shifted somewhere else. Oh well, it's still Durham...
If I was to e-mail about college choice; who should I sent it to? The department, new college, or the university admission's office?

Btw, does anybody know roughly how long it would take to walk from grey to the anthropology department? I know itll be quite long, but Im not so great at distances and times, and I was wondering if anyone knew first hand or could make a guestimate.

Fifteen minutes at the most, I'd think.

This is definitely the plan. So, walking's annoying when you don't have a choice, but if you have to do it, you just get on with it and get used to it. So, without even realising it, we'll be getting fit, while everybody else will be gazing in abject horror at their accumulating alcohol flab.

Living in a college away from your department = painless drinking.

I'd consider phoning them... but i'm too scared... i'll just wait and see!

Btw... i see your location says you're in Fareham... is that the Fareham next to Gosport, cos if it is.... i used to live in Gosport until 2 and a half years ago!

I'm really sorry to hear you didnt get in tho, the more people i hear of getting rejected the more i wonder if college advisor was right :frown:

lol, yeah I was a bit nervous about phoning them up but I really needed to start organising transport for open days so I thought it was time to start harrassing them! :P I imagine everyone will be hearing sometime soon - they said we all should have by the end of March. And don't listen to school advisors - they're just there to test your stress levels before uni.

And yes, that is Fareham near Gosport - "the rectum of England" as a friend of mine recently described it (bit harsh but there you go!)

Yup, I have it all figured out. No taking up hours to go to the gym, or worry about the crappy diet. Just knowing that we will have to haul ass to our far-away department/college we will be inadvertently getting fit and saving time!

See, if anybody's put off by the distance between college/department, then that's the answer: it will get you fit!

I think those of us who are quite a way from our department have it good
Course this could just be making the best of a not-so-great situation, but meh, still:  hehehe
LieDown, hate to disappoint you, but Grey food will more than make up for all the walking you could possibly do in Durham. I gained a stone when I was living in, and I walked absolutely everywhere :/

Ah no, my plan may fail!! I will have to figure out a back up if it starts to go that way.....

What's the food at grey like?
I feel sick every time i remember i'm still waiting to hear :frown:

I've pretty much decided if i dont get an offer i'll phone and try to explain my situation properly (since my advisor wont have done) and then if they still wont give me a conditional i'll reapply next year. Thats how desperate i am. If they asked me for 46 IB points (its out of 45 if you dont know!) i'll do ANYTHING to find that extra point. And if i still dont get in i'll wait and reapply next year

^ I'd agree with that description actually! Of Gosport at least. Fareham is ok, but i'm glad to have escaped from Gosport. Which 6th form are you at?

No, it's not, it really is the best situation possible. Even if the diet does lead to weight gain (which it blatantly won't with all the WALKING), imagine how much worse it would be if you had the food, the alcohol, and the absence of any exercise!

I deny the denial of this post.

The food's alright most of the time- breakfasts are good, and lunches are often really great (there's always several hot options, or a make your own baguette thing, and masses of salad to go with), but dinners can be a bit... variable. There are lots of potatoes, and you may see the same mince several times a week in a variety of guises ('chilli', shepherd's pie, stew and dumplings, and just 'mince' when it's the weekend and they can't be arsed). But they made several improvements while I was there, and I haven't eaten in college at all this year, so it may well be even better now- the catering manager is very keen to improve things, it's just that the budget is pretty tiny. And I suppose a fair amount of my culinary downfall was frequent visits to the pizza bar...

I'd really recommend joining the college gym if you have any inclination to exercise- it's only about £25 for your entire time at uni, and though it's a teeny room the equipment is really good, and the JCR spends loads of money keeping it up to date.
26 days left before that they must have send all their decisions.
ARGH, I can't wait anymore, it's just so annoying not having letter nor e-mail ...

Hey i made that mistake too.... they only have to AIM to have replied by March 31st.... technically they dont have to. So the wait could be even longer.

Its driving me insane too!
i'm so depressed that they havent got back to me :frown:
i find myself wanting to get home insanely quick just to check my letterbox :frown:
