Burkhardt house uni of Manchester accommodation

I'm looking at accommodation and I just don't know if I should put burkhardt house as my first option or not, as the reviews on student crowd kind of put me off.
If anyone has previously stayed in burkhardt house, what's it like? Is it quiet or is it a nice mix ?
im currently at burkhardt. i put it as my first option even after reading the reviews. but its actually not as bad as you think it is (clean wise) when i read the reviews i thought it was going to be really dirty and stuff like that but its not (for me anyway) the kitchen is quite big and spacious. the rooms are a good size but i think it does depend on what floor youre on, however im not sure.
the bathroom is just standard - shower, toliet and sink. when i first moved in the shower was really bad - it was old and the water was coming out extremely powerful and it was just freezing cold water. however i told reception and they literally had maintance fix it the next day and its now a modern shower head and the temperature is fine.
my desk is big and you get an office chair as well - (also three shelves on the wall for books etc.)
the beds are singles but trust me if you get a place in burkhardt * for the love of god get a matress comforter.
that is the one essential thing that you need when you go to uni halls. The beds are them old springy ones and they genuienly are the worst.
If you have lived in a double/king sized bed and your bed is comfy. this will be awfulf or the first few weeks/months of staying in halls - you will not get a good nights sleep.
The radiator is alright. you can have it on whenever you want but it will only stay on for about 30 minutes (not sure maybe 40/50) before it switches off but you can put it back on whenever you want. it does the job in the winter. Other things* wardrobe, draws and mirrors.
Theres four floors and the ground floor is males only - i think its just always been like that, dont ask why because im not sure. i think this year the first floor is just girls as well. but all the other floors are mixed.
it is quiet - its not the loudest of halls - its like the remote halls of uom because whenever you tell someone you live in burkhardt they just give you a funny look and say where? you just say hulme hall and they go "ohhh the one with the nice bar". Yeah we share a bar with hulme hall.
When you read about them being close you think that hulme hall is like a 5 to 10 minute walk away. Its actaully right next to us - and the bar is really nice with £1,90 pints and its always a good atmosphere in there and a chance to get to know people from hulme hall. Theres two pool tables and a darts board. - couches and they have two plasmas with playstations to play on. The bar also holds weekly - quizzies, jazz. comedy, movie nights - all sorts really. its probably the best part of the two accomodations because its somewhere to socialise with everyone and get to meet them. so if you end up coming definitely spend the first few nights in the bar.
*plus its not quiet in freshers week but after that it is ( thatll be the same everywhere tho)
its not the most social of halls and itll be full of meds, physic, maths, nursing degrees that are demanding so dont expect it to be very social.
i think its the best hall for people with demanding degrees because most of the time its very quiet.
they have res life teams that will support you and help you with any issues anyway.
i would also say its really convenient for going uni as its literally like a 10/15 walk away.
You can pay for catering at hulme hall as well if you want - cant remember how much it is.
But if i had to chose again i would go for shared bathroom - ensuites just arent really that good. its expensive and i feel like going to a hall like this is taking away of lot of the social aspect of uni because we havent got a social area in my flat so you rarely see your flatmates unless youre cooking. * thats just my views everyones different and everyones experience is different.

When did you apply for accommodation? Just curious because I picked it as my first choice and I'm wondering about the odds of me getting in

I applied on the 29th of May and got the offer on the 22nd of August.
So I'm assuming that this month is the time for you to apply. Earlier the better I suppose.
I not sure on what the odds are but I know ensuite is high demand. Just make sure that you've thought through your second and third options because you may end up getting one of them.
But like I said I think the earlier the application the better chance of you getting your first option.

thank you for this, I really needed this and I really do appreciate it.
I'm actually doing nursing too, so maybe it would be a good option,

Just wanted to ask if there's a common room in burkhardt house? Also are there even any formal balls and events as such? I haven't really read anything about them Except on the uni website 😭

It's no problem. I was in the same position and wanted to know more about the accommodation.
That's really good. I know it's hard on your year with the bursary and all the stuff that's happened but I think you'll enjoy it - you get a lot of help.

I did find it hard with how much it costed and had to pay monthly so definitely sit down if you haven't already and work out your expenses and what you'll have and not have, because I didn't do that and it didn't work out very good.

There's no common rooms in the actual flats we just have larger kitchens and dinning space.
There's no T.V room with couches, however I did see the other day near the reception a room say JRC/tv room but I've not been in there because the majority of the time a choir or orchestra are rehearsing in there. So I just think that it must be used for that now because how are you supposed to listen to the tv while they're all playing music.
it can be quite isolating as there isn't any common room and you don't really get that much of an opportunity to hang out with your flat mates unless in the kitchen.

Yeah. As in balls like you'll have typical society balls so it just depends on what you sign up for.
And there's balls in Hulme hall next to burkhardt. They do a Harry Potter formal dinner and a formal dress one for like £5.
I haven't been to them so I wouldn't know what they're like.
in terms of events. Like days out and stuff?
I've not really seen any in terms of accom it's more stuff like quizzes in the bar and comedy/jazz nights. Plus recently a talent show.
But don't worry any all the events will be in the societies you join - join their fb group when you come in sept or whenever and they always post events and nights out.

P.S if you have any questions about nursing I'll be happy to help you as well btw:P
