Hi .

What is the difference between the product moment correlation coefficient and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient?

They both provide an answer that is between -1 and 1 and shows the strength of correlation.

Why use one over the other?

If you have data that is not originally in a numerical form then you will have to use Spearman'd rank. Firstly you'd rank each variable from 1 to n and then calculate the square of the differences between the two ranks. This result can be used in a similar way to PMCC. PMCC is applicable for parameters where data is numerical, eg height of a a student against age.
