I've absolutely no idea how to find historiography on my chosen dissertation topic, which is on JFK's usage of personality in politics.

Take for example an essay on the Cuban Missile Crisis. It's easier because it has the "traditional" school of shortly after his death when everyone thought he was great (around 1963-1970). Then the "revisionist" school when people began to reconsider (around 1971-1985). Then the "post-revisionist" school when people thought he did okay, but not great (around 1986 onwards).

I've no idea how to do similar for my dissertation topic. My supervisor says I can't use works written after his death in 1963 because then they would be hindered by sympathy for him, so I'm clueless what to do all round. How can I write a dissertation and discuss historiography using works from only 1959-1963?

I'm completely lost. I've asked him several times but I'm still confused.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

So your supervisor says you can only use historians dating from before JFK's death. Were any histories written about him by then? Does your supervisor mean don't use works written in the immediate aftermath of his assassination? Saying you can't use anything written since 1963 is ridiculous.

I emailed him about it and you're right. I'm not supposed to use memoirs etc, in the 10 year period after his death, not just an outright avoidance of anything post death at all.

I thought it must be something like that. Good luck with it.
