Linear = all exams taken at the end of the course, if you want to resit to improve the grade you retake all exams
Modular = the content of the course is dividied into separate modules or units, exams for each unit can be taken at different times and if you want t improve the grade you can just retake individual units

In England all A levels are moving from modular to linear format but not all at the same time so depending on subjects some are still modular and some are linear. Separate reforms are happening in Wales and Northern Ireland. International A levels are not affected by these changes.

The changes only affect university applications in that many students won't have any AS results to back up their A level predictions. Some universities are widening the use of admissions tests as a result.
