The Student Room Group

Bristol Gym Membership

So I know its past the deadline and all for filling out that form to pay like a zillion pounds for 3 years membership at Bristol uni's gym/sports park thingy, but someone told me the other day that you can apply fo a free membership if you get any amount of student loan - is this true? I can't remember or look it up cos I threw my form my away.

Of student grant then yes... Thats how I read it anyway. It's actually on the grey form you have to fill out I believe...

Reply 2

oh right, fair enough. I don't feel like I've missed out then seeing as I'm not entitled to any student grant, and therefore no free gym membership. I shall just have to pay every time I go...

Don't worry I'm doing the same. I don't like the £4 each time, but I'm not coughing up £330 quid, when I've not yet worked out how much I'll use the facilities. Why can't we just pay year by year?!

Reply 4

Depends how often you go but generally pay as you go is a very bad idea - you're at uni for around 30 weeks, and if you only go twice a week it's going to be £240 for the year.

Reply 5

true it works out expensive, but I simply can't afford to pay the lump sum for 3 yrs in one go. I can afford £8 a week if I get a part time job in Bristol.

The only thing i'd use the gym for is the classes, which with the pass I only think you get £1 off, so really i'll not bother with it. Not even sure if i'll go to the gym at all yet XD

Reply 7

you know if you qualify for the free sports pass, is it just a one year one?? and where do you get it from?

Reply 8

You get it for the full three years and it's automatically on your student card which has a barcode on it with that encoded into it. You have to pay £5 for the gym induction though. Shamefully i'm in my second year of having a free one and have only just booked in my induction for sunday...lol!

Reply 9

ah ****, you have to do the sports induction to be able to use the gym??

How do you sign up for the induction?? I hope its not too late!

Reply 10

I get a grant but was never given a free sports pass, who is best to contact about this? (and do you have a website explaining this?)

Reply 11

You can pretty much get an induction at any time during the year i think. Not 100% on that though. There's be plenty of opportunities to get them in the first few weeks of term, You just go into the sports centre, pay £5 and go and sign up for one outside the gym upstairs, all very easy.

but what if you get a grant in your first year, but not for your last years [as in.. change of circumstances - parents earning more one year than the previous]

Reply 13

well then your student card won't have a sports pass on it anymore. If you don't get any bursary at all then that will be taken off it aswell.

yey free gym membership - maybe i will come to Bristol!

You don't get it any more, unfortunately....
