Paracetamol + alcohol

Hello there. Now I've lately had the misfortune of having a root canal go bad and now it's hurting pretty badly. Until I can get it operated on I'm taking painkillers, but it's also freshers fortnight so... you know, lots of drinking going on.

Now as always I've been on wikipedia looking up the effects of paracetamol on the liver and it doesn't sound too great in conjunction with alcohol. So what I want to know is, do I need to be careful about mixing these two things? Or can the liver deal with both of them at the same time?

If I have to choose between the two.... I'd go with alcohol. If I drink enough maybe I couldn't feel the tooth aching anyway?

Do you really need to drink during freshers week? you know... you've got the rest of university life to drink yourself stupid, why not skip it until you're feeling better...
I'm in my third and final year! And yes, I would rather drink than take painkillers. So long as it's not going to make my tooth worse I don't see the problem with that.

OUCH! What happened?

If you want my 2 cents, paracetamol is a placebo 'painkiller' at best, there is no scientific evidence to suggest WHY it appears to suppress pain, I don't use the stuff. I use codeine phosphate (prescription stuff). Codeine DOES suppress pain; it also makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

paracetamol + alcohol might not be the greatest combination for someone who has had liver failure in the past but i shouldnt have thought that its something that someone of your age should worry about, get drinking
I'm informed by a friend whose mother is a pharmacist that there shouldn't be any ill-effects. I was fine last week taking a couple of paracetamol at 5pm then drinking two and a half pints starting from around 7pm. Whether it's supposed to do any sort of internal damage I'm not sure, but I doubt it does and I felt the same as if I had drank the same amount without having the paracetamol.

I've never had any ill effects from it to my knowledge.
I suppose wikipedia makes it sound more scary than it really is. They used the word toxins a lot :p: Still, to be on the safe side I might restrct myself to 1 dose of paracetamol today. I do plan on drinking rather a lot lol. Anyway, cheers everyone!
Why not go for ibuprofen instead? It's more effective than paracetamol anyway...
Paracetamol is 16p and it seems to be doing the job for now. I'm seeing a dentist on Wednesday so hopefully he can tell me if it'll get worse, and possibly prescribe something if there's an infection.
You have to take Wikipedia with a pinch of salt sometimes. A while ago I looked up 'vertigo' and the first line was VERTIGO MAY CAUSE INSTANT DEATH. Seemed a bit alarmist to me lol

As long as you take the recommended dose then it's fine to mix with alcohol. NHS Direct has lots of handy information of which common painkillers you can take with alcohol. It's only when you overdose on paracetamol that it becomes an issue.

No.
Don't even think of taking alc and para.
Dont take alc and redbull either - even if it tastes nice.

alc and para - will send you to hospital. No matter how little of each you consume. The doctor's will pump your stomach out in order to save your life.
Friend of mine did, and well. The above sentence is what happened to her.
Also, the alc slows your heart rate, and redbull speeds your heartrate up (or other way round, cant fully remember) and with the two opposites occuring, you higher your chances of suffering a heart attack and possibly killing yourself or inflicting permanent heart damage on yourself.
Mmm the fun! ^__^

Complete and utter *******s.

The BNF (you know what that is?) says it's fine.

What's more, there is research to show that alcohol may protect the liver from the hepatotoxic oxidative metabolism of paracetamol.

And if you have trouble keeping up, here's the dumbed down guide.

That is complete rubbish (the alcohol and paracetamol part), and goes against NHS advice. I've done it enough times myself to know that it doesn't result in a trip to the hospital. Your friend either overdosed on the paracetamol, had alcohol poisoning, previous liver damage or a bad reaction to either that was probably pre-existing. That's a silly thing to say and doesn't match expert medical advice at all, it's just scaremongering:

It's not more effective or less, it's a different kind of analgesic. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen are far more effective in treating rheumatic pain wheras paracetamol works better as an antipyrexic and neuropathic painkiller.

Alright to the people who quoted me - No, I'm not professional.
And yeah, it's probably not wise of me to use one event to state my opnions
But tbh, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yes, my friend may have overdosed, or bene allergic - but that still happened to her, and well, if you want to ignore it, be my guest. If you want doctor's pumping your stomach's out, sure.
Because I'm fully aware that not all advice applies to everyone, so whatever advice doctor's give - is for whoever they are giving it to only.

So, very sorry if I gave the wrong impression, but sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry, and it's better to actually go to a doctor and get advice, because not everybody can withstand the effects of taking alc + para.

Presuming this is a joke, it's not funny and it's misleading. We don't need this sort of post in H&R.

As I said above, I took paracetamol and shortly afterwards drank two and a half pints, and felt absolutely no ill-effects on the night or in the following day.
i regularly take 2 paracetamol/ibuprofane before i go to bed after a night out (having had +20 units sometimes) and it hasnt had any effect on me so far. Unless you have liver/stomach problems there are no short term effects of mixing paracetamol and alcohol.

I'd be interested to know if there are any long term effects though (aside from the ones normally associated with binge drinking.) People are always telling me it'll destroy my liver and i should face my hangovers like a man

HELLL NO! don't take parac + alcohol, that combination would be like giving your liver a few good kicks!
