I don't know about depression, but I know about sadness.

I tried it once, to see what would happen. Given I had no razors around, I used a serrated kitchen knife (also because I felt more self destructive - I wanted it to hurt, and I wanted to show someone what it flet for someone they loved to hurt themselves [she'd done it]).

It was terrifying - and mainly because it was so effective. I can completely understand how addictive it could become.

What I'm trying to say is, I don't think it automatically means there is a deep seated cause - it can be an amazingly effective supressant for normal emotion turmoil. Perhaps consider if there is enough in your life to be depressed about if you weren't cut up.

I really think you'd know if you had serious depression - there are other signs. As someone else mentioned, not all self-harmers have depression (though they may all be a bit depressed  ).

Not all people who self harm are depressed. More often than not it is a coping mechanism for something - it could be somethign from years ago.

What are you using to cut yourself?

Have you thought about or tried placing an elastic band around your wrist and when you have the urge to cut yourself pinging it until that urge has gone away? If not how would you feel about that? If you've tried it did it help?

Why do you self-harm? If it's an addiction (as it sounds like it is) then it probably isn't linked to depression.

Maybe, i self harm, and i'm depressed

But you should get help, once i cut my neck as there was no space left on my arms, the cut was really deep and i fainted

Theres a good website about if you cant help self-harming-how to do it safely, will try and find it
But if you can, go see your doctor

I self harm and I suffer from clinical depression

This website may help you to understand how you feel

I'd also advise you to see your doctor. Even if you dont have depression, self harming shows that your going through some sort of emotional difficulty. couunselling or therapy might help to understand what or why

Feel free to send me a message if you want

I just started uni, and find social things very hard. I have cut myself for about 4 years, and although tried to stop tonight i couldnt help myself. My maion question is does it mean i have depression?

No it doesn't mean you have depression, I am in year 9 and I self-harm but I know I don't have depression. Self-harm isn't just caused by depression for example it can be caused OCD or just a habit etc.
