Journalism Portfolio?

Hi,
I have recently chosen to back out of doing an EPQ however i still would like to show universities my abilities. I have been thinking about creating a Journalism portfolio (as that's what i want to study in the future) however i haven't got any work experience or any published pieces? Can i get some tips of what i should include?

The best thing is to write articles and pitches for publication - do you have a blog or similar which covers something you're interested in? Writing from that would be one thing to include. Speak to your local newspaper or local magazines and school newsletter/website about writing articles/copy. Contact some local charities or small businesses to see if they would appreciate some help from you to produce press releases (the best press releases are articles ready to go). Pitch some ideas to https://www.theguardian.com/education/mortarboard/2013/sep/23/blogging-students-how-to-pitch-and-blog (and even if they aren't accepted write the articles anyway.
Think about what sort of journalist you want to be (http://www.nctj.com/want-to-be-a-journalist ) and produce work aimed at different media - magazines, websites, videos, radio.
