I have asked, seriously, in the past, for an Oxford-students only forum, but we're unlikely to get one (although it would be easy enough to implement, ie limit access to those logging in from an Oxford IP address or who registered with an Oxford email address) because, frankly, not enough people would answer questions in this forum (which would, I think, become a an Oxford applicants thread). But I can ask again.

I think a non-applicant-engulfed Oxford forum would be good, but limiting it to Oxford IP addresses or even those registered on here with their Ox webmail addresses would cut all us alumns out - and we (or at least I) like to hang around and talk about the Oxford days with people who actually know what I'm on about.

That's not to mention the Ox students registered here with personal email addresses, and those on holiday / home at the weekend/ postgrads who commute, who therefore have unstable IP identities.

The VPN will get you an Oxford IP address. It doesn't solve the problem of ex-students getting access, but presumably one could also make PidgeMe or Oxon.org addresses welcome too?

Yeah, although I always thought the Oxon.org addresses were pretentious and desperate, like attempting to cling on to the last vestiges of one's Oxford glory days, so never got one.

Why would it be necessary to restrict the forum in any way, though? OxGoss was never closed access, but no green young applicant ever set foot there, and if they did they'd get redirected by the angry mob pretty sharpish. What's wrong with that?

Well, the official answer is a "no", because applicants vastly outnumber current students. OxGoss managed to stay students-only by scaring applicants (and quite a few students) ****less and being really vicious. TSR is never going to let that happen, and it would be a nightmare to mod (or not mod, as the case may be).

An easy promise as you're never helpful

epic humourlessness.

epic.
Surely a thread or 2 is sufficient anyway? I just subscribe to the threads I want from particular forums.

I tried logging on a few weeks ago, and was utterly bewildered that I was directed to TSR. Bring OxGoss back! I wasted too much time on there hurling abuse...anyone remember lethal bitch?

I, personally, felt completely safe in my anonymity on the board. While I never really posted things that could genuinely fall foul of the Proctors, I'd assume the Proctors had other things to worry about than an internet message board. Besides, the admins guaranteed your anonymity (I would imagine that's subject to a warrant, but I doubt the Proctors would go that far for an e-mail address), should you wish to keep it.

My Oxgoss identity was not anonymous (no, cant reveal who cos this one IS anonymous), and I posted a lot of stuff that could have gotten back to me. None of it ever did.

I miss oxgoss like a crackwhore misses her fix.

Oh, stuff came back to me all the time. Then again, I wasn't exactly secret with my identity, what with posting from the library during finals. And I'd do it all again. Ruffling the feathers of those climbing the greasy pole was fun. Post finals I had definitely switched into lurker mode; anything else would have been sad...

To be honest, just viewing the vast majority of topic titles in this forum makes me nostalgic for that place:- were we so bloody neurotic when we were 17/18? I sometimes think some of the posters on here will have an embolism if they're not accepted.

Ah, the joys of self-selection... seriously, I do hope that some of the applicants on here are either joking about their crazy questions or just very, very unusual, 'cause they're the ones I'm coming in with.

I'm sorry to hear that my Oxford experience will be devoid of hilariously vicious internet forums. It sounds like a truly great loss.

OxGoss (or its spirit) isn't quite dead after all.

Sorry, I already owned the application process last year. Mostly through my superior snottiness. Bribery helped too.

Oops. **** indeed. Now corrected. In my defence, it was a quarter to five in the morning, and I had just attempted and failed to complete two problem sheets.

Personally, I would have gone with the original post (ah, the joys of post archive).
