Drama at sixth form?

Is doing drama at sixth form a good way to get into theatre acting as a career which could then extend to television?

It's a small step in that direction. You need to get as much acting experience as you can, not just in school. Have a look at the National Youth Theatre, for example, or private drama schools in your area.

At degree level you would ideally study acting at the likes of Rada or Lamda.

I think my local college offer acting courses. Is that the next step after sixth form?

Acting doesn't have a single linear 'path'. There are many routes to becoming a professional actor - look at the wiki pages of some of your favourites. As I said, get as much experience as you can now, you don't have to wait till after sixth form.

I know what you mean the actor Jimmy Nail who played Oz in Auf Wiedersehen Pet had no experience in acting but now he has a career in acting and a singing career!

Indeed, though the experiences of his co-stars Tim Healy, Kevin Whately and Timothy Spall are more typical.

Note also that while it is possible to become a professional actor by studying Drama at university, the chances of success are much higher if you go to a specialised acting school.
