Brasenose or Keble?

Hello there! im applying to study medicine and i'm being undecisive (as usual) about my college choice. Brasenose is nice and central but Kebel is very close to the science area. i dont like cycling or roller-skating so i will be walking/bussing it around oxford. what do you think?

i just read a thread about additional information on the form. my teacher went to oxford and she told me to say something along the lines of:

"i like to be taught at a world renowned university, by professionals leading in their fields. Accessing a library that contains every copy-righted material that has been published has captured my interest the most and would be a great advantage for my studies."

is she right because most of you guy said that if you have nothing regarding the degree you are applying to, leave it blanck.

hmmm.....so what shall i do??

1) Note that it's spelt "Keble".
2) Anything within more-or-less central Oxford is at most 15 minutes' walk away from anything else, usually much less. BNC is not very much more more central then KBL.
3) Many people leave the OAP blank; unless you personally have something to say relevant to Oxford that's not already in your UCAS PS, then say nothing. Don't flannel.

DtS
Leave it blank, they arent looking for a suck-up paragraph, more anything which is important to your application.

I.E. it should be about you not Oxford, eg if you are applying to a slightly different subject at Oxford than elsewhere. E.g. PPE instead of politics. then you could write something about phil and econ.

As for college, definatley BNC! (Im biased though!)

sorry about Keble spelling. i was in doubt about it but couldn't be bothered to go to oxford website and check it as my internet is soooooooo slow today. i dont mind walking for 15 mins (i walk that everyday to school!).
Either is close enough, both to the science area and to Central Oxford. The main difference is that Brasenose is an old sandstone college, while Keble is newer (Victorian brick) and is bigger in terms of number of students. It probably doesn't matter which you choose. Perhaps look at accommodation and financial incentives that each can provide?
Keble's architecture is not to some peoples taste. To put it kindly

Each to their own, the same can be said of most Oxford colleges.
I quite like in a strange kind of way. Its certainly unique, but I dont any others colleges that divide opinion so strongley.

Bare in mind that as a medic, in your clinical years you won't be based in the science area, so if you pick either BNC or Keble you won't be that much nearer the hospital you would be assigned at (then again, you could change colleges for your clinical years). Like everyone else said though, there ae only about 8mins walking between BNC and Keble. Consider, other facts like F1 Fanatic suggested - do you want a big college or a small? accomodation for all 3 years or would you rather live out? etc etc.

I think St Catz divides opinions more strongly!

I would very much like keble if it were just the victorian brickwork- it's the disgusting more recent additions to the college- the big metal and concrete monstrosity near the bar (which would be ugly, too, if it weren't a bar) that really put me off.

In short, apply to lincoln- it has no nasty concrete buildings anywhere on the main site.
brasenose for the win

I'm applying to Lincoln for Medicine!

To the OP: I considered both of those colleges, have you actually been round them and had a look (or is that not really an option?) as that's obviously a better way to find out the most about them and to get a 'feel' for the atmosphere. Also, I'd advise reading the alternative prospecti written by students, they are often very insightful and aren't as 'samey' as college proppecti can tend to be.

In the end though, IMO there is no such thing as a 'bad' college, and I think it's somthing like 20% of offers are given out to people for colleges which weren't their first choice anyway! I think it's actually rare to 'fall in love' with a particular college, and probably a little unhealthy! Go with your gut feeling and best of luck with the application!

Cheers,

Brasenose. No question.

(Sorry that I couldn't offer any considered, nonpartisan advice)
Well 3 people have said brasenose, and no-ones said keble... so err i'd go with that!

I'd say brasenose too btw. lol.

Not that there's any bias in the comments or anything

I visited Brasenose for the open day in June; it was a really cool college and the students were well, entertaining lol. But I've decided to apply to Keble instead, it's a bit bigger, has an equally good atmosphere and dare I say it, I liked the architecture, (they have a gym too).

Like someone else has said, you really need to visit the college and the city before you can be sure where is right for you. I'm applying for Law and Keble has one of the biggest intakes for it, so again, this might matter to you. Anyway, wherever you apply I'm sure you'll love it.

P.S. I live about ten minutes from you. :p:

well. i have been on an open day to St Anne's and i didn't like the rooms or the way it's set. but didn't get a chance to see other ones. i'm applying based on info on website and intake for Medicine (Brasenose:8, Keble:4-6) so from that and from most of what you unbiased ppl have said (only jocking) i think Brasenose is the place to be! plus it's just off the high street, according to a map meaning a great shopping experience. how is the accommodation like? are there any en-suite bed rooms? (dare i say, i dont fancy the idea of using public toilets everyday )
