AND instagram. Still, I wonder if things are going to change anytime soon. I mean, you keep getting more and more youtubers so they might start paying people less? Or, at least, the competition will be even tougher

Well, it's basically AdSense that's responsible. Videos have ads on, more views on the video = more revenue for Google from their ads, so the more YouTubers, the better for Google.

You'd be surprised - I'd hazard a guess that most of the viewers on popular YouTube channels don't even know what AdBlock is.

A youtuber I watch has claimed that he earns about $100 per million views he gets.

This is just on PCs and laptops as well. A HUGE portion of viewers are probably viewing on their mobiles using the YouTube app, which means they can't block any ads.

There's an adblock for mobiles too isn't it? It's probably not as popular though.

Depends on how many subscribers they have as well as what category their videos are under. Psy, for example, has lots of subscribers and is under the music category and has a CPM (Cost per Mille) of $7.9 per 1000 views, and would have made $7.9m by hitting 1billion views on Gangnam Style.
Other popular categories with high CPM include gaming and comedy, so all those big channels are making a lot of money as well. In other categories, such as fitness or beauty, the YouTubers can also use their popularity to launch their own brands too.

Yeah, let's not forget that beauty vloggers often get paid by third parties to promote their cosmetics/clothes etc

Yep, with all sorts of channels the popular ones are likely getting money from endorsements & placements, sponsorships and their own brands. All those "Click the link below to get this and and use this discount code!" links are making them money
I don't even use YouTube anymore! It really annoys me, especially with the stupid things people post!
At the end of the day the YouTubers are getting followers, likes and comments so it must be worth there while. No idea how Instagram works or if they get paid
